Özet
Numerous studies have been conducted to understand how the independent variable factors such as age, sex, family income, parents' education, etc., affect the development of materialism among adolescents who are defined by the World Health Organization (Strategic directions or improving the health and development of children and adolescents, www.whqlibdoc.who.int/hq/2002/WHO_FCH_CAH_02.21.pdf; 2011) as those between 10 and 19 years of age. But much fewer studies have been done to determine the same for university students, especially outside the West, who are generally comprised of young adults between 17 and 24 years of age. Our present study of students in a major Turkish university is a small step toward filling that gap. Our results confirm trends found in many previous studies for the same variables in studies of youth development in other cultures. Since the level of materialism for our sample was found to be relatively low by materialism scale and in comparison to those in several cultures, we sought to provide some plausible explanations.
