Teaching vocabulary through collocations and cliches in efl classes

Bu calismanin amaci kelimelerin birlikte kullamldigi kelimelerle ogretiminin zit anlam, es anlam, aciklama, tammlama gibi klasik yontemlerle ogretiminden daha iyi sonuc verip vermeyecegini arastirmaktir. Arastirma Konya Karatay Haciveyiszade Ahmet Hashas ilkogretim Okulu'nda toplam 59 yedinci sinif ogrencisi iizerinde yapilmi§tir. Oniki kisa okuma par^asi kullanilmistir. Bilinmeyen kelimeler kontrol gruba klasik kelime ogretim teknikleriyle, deney grubuna da kelimelerin birlikte kullamldigi diger kelimelerle ogretilmistir. Calismanin sonunda kelimelerin birlikte kullamldigi kelimelerle ogretiminin klasik tekniklerle ogretimden daha iyi sonuc verdigi ve yeni kelimelerin hatirlanmasina yardimci oldugu goriilmustiir. Bu deneysel calismanin soiiucu arastirmacimn kelimelerin birlikte kullamldi kelimelerle ogretimi tekniginin kelime hazinesinin gelisimine ve sozcuklerin hatirlanmasina olumlu katki saglayan etkili bir strateji olduguna dair dusiincesinin gecerliligini dogrulamistir.

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether teaching vocabulary through collocations will result in better vocabulary learning than teaching vocabulary using classical techniques such as using definition, synonym, antonym, and mother tonque translations. 7KHVWXG\ZDVFRQGXFWHGDW+DFà YH\LV]DGH$KPHW+DúKDú3ULPDU\6FKRRO7KH participants were 59 seventh grade students. Twelve small reading passages were used. The control group was presented the new vocabulary through classical techniques and the experimental group was presented the new vocabulary through their collocations. All the results have shown that teaching vocabulary through collocations and cliches results in a better learning of the words than presenting them using classical techniques and enhances retention of new vocabulary items. The result of the experimental study has confirmed the the validity of the researcher?s assumptions that learning vocabulary through collocations is an effective strategy which positively contributes to the development and retention of vocabulary.
