Since the mid 19th century when Ch. Thomas Newton started Knidos studies, well-known Knidos candles have had a significant place and importance in Hellenistic and Roman Period ceramics. The candles which were made from grey dough and exported from Knidos in Hellenistic era and which are called “Knidos Type Candle” in the literature were the indicators of Knidosian candle workshops which had a great export capacity in Roman period. The samples which had “Knidos Leaf” on the shoulder and “Knidos Knot” on the grip are known to be “Kniods Type” in the literature. The manufacture of this type of candles did not stop in the second half of the 1st century B.C., which has been thought to be true so far. On the contrary, their production continued during the 1st century B.C. Candle manufacture in Knidos was in the ascendant in Roman Period. Especially the products of “Romanesis” and from his workshops were seen in many centers. This potential of Knidos workshops seemed to continue well into the 2nd century A.D. According to the results of the excavations, it was understood that manufacture continued till the 3rd century A.D. However, this manufacture continued to meet local demand. Among the samples we found, the ones we dated back to the 3rd and 4th centuries A.D. are samples from this group.
