The primary objective of this study was to analyze individual and organizational gatekeeper roles performed by Turkish sports journalists on Twitter. A mixed-pattern research method was employed to comprehend and clarify the changing gatekeeper roles of sports journalists in detail on Twitter. Initially, the Twitter accounts of the 35 sports journalists, intensively followed by Twitter users and the fields of activity of the institutions the journalists work for, were studied by content analysis, one of the quantitative research techniques, while accounting for the last 15 days of the football summer transfer period in Turkey. A coding scale with 24 main categories divided into two domains was developed based on the available literature and the current study objectives. In an effort to support the findings acquired by the content analysis, a further study was conducted with 23 Twitter-user sports journalists using the semi-structured interview technique, one of the qualitative research methods. A form comprising 17-question was also developed in line with the existing literature and the questions generated in the coding scale. The acquired data revealed that traditional individual and organizational gatekeeper roles of sports journalists have diminished on Twitter, and they even had to share their functions with various individuals or institutions (fans/followers, phenomena, athletes, sports clubs, etc.). However, sports journalists appeared to benefit from Twitter features such as retweeting, mentioning, and hashtags more frequently, thereby disseminating the unedited (unredacted) user tweets through these functions. In addition to the gatekeeper roles of sports journalists, this study further calculated the average number of followers as 132 thousand and clarified that sports journalists came into prominence as agenda-setters. In conclusion, the study findings indicated that the traditional gatekeeper functions of sports journalists have weakened on Twitter and that journalists and institutions alone have lost their influence in the news screening and selection process.
