Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the most commonly seen complication of Diabetes mellitus (DM) and the most significant cause of blindness between the ages of 20 and 65. It was clinically demonsrated that hyperglicemia may lead to functional changes prior to the development of retinopathy. The most significant in the course of DM is that the functional deficits should be determined before ophtalmological changes occur, and the development of the disease should be prevented. It is a well-known fact that metabolic control plays a key role in the prevention of DR in patients with DM. This article aims to review the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and retinal nerve fiber analysis techniques and to evaluate the effect of diabet and metabolic control on RNFL.
