Whatever their characteristics are, people’s educational rights are under protection of constitution. People with special needs are also in this group. These people are educated both in state schools and private special education institutions, which are mentioned in 1997 regulation by the Ministry of National Education. Because of the insufficient number of state schools, private special education instutions have been opened everywhere in our country. The aim of these institutions is to help handicapped people to become psychosocially and occupationally independent in their physiological, anatomic and environmental limits (Korucu, 2005). Handicapped people are trained by different specialists, different from other staff such as special education teachers, physictherapists, nutritionists and psychological counsellors. The aim is to support these people with total approach, which bring variety in special education forward. The basic principle of the psychological counsellor is to help people, considering their needs and abilities. What people with special needs require is psychological counseling in both private special education and state institutions because psychological counseling and guidance service not only cover services for child but also for parents. Psychological counsellors have many important duties. Private special education institutions employ many psychological counsellors; however, there have been no studies on psychological counsellors that work in these institutions. The aim of this study is to put forward the data concerning working conditions and problems of the psychological counsellors working in private special education institutions. For this reason, following problem questions were tried to be answered: 1. What are the educational problems that psychological counsellors face in private special education institutions? 2. In order to test the validity of the questionnaire, the views of 4 experts that work at Ahmet Keleşoğlu School of Education at Selcuk University in Konya were asked, and then the semi-structured form was revised considering their views. Besides, experts that are good at qualitative research techniques at Selcuk University were also asked to write their views about the interview questions. Pilot applications were done and the form was revised one more time and made ready for the application. The participants were asked whether they were volunteers and the place and time of the interview was explained, and then they were interviewed. The participants’ views were gathered through the semi structured interview form. The interview forms were numbered. Nvivo 8.0, a computer supported analysis program was used to code the interview form. The subjects that are parallel to the research and the data content were matched to analyze the data. Educational problems that psychological counsellors that work in the private special education institutions face: The problems to do with their duties: Considering answers that participants gave about their duties, it was indicated that the managers did not know what the psychological counsellors’ duties are and they were expected to serve as special education teacher. Second problem was, special education students did not recognize their individual differences and so they were asked to do mixed education and activities. Problems concerning their education: That psychological counsellors did not have sufficient education during undergraduate studies was the mostly stated problem by the participants. Institutional problems that psychological counsellors face in private special education institutions: That private special education managers had different views and expectations from psychological counsellors was mostly stated problem by the participants. Secondly, psychological counsellors indicated that the owners of the institutions asked them to work as special education teachers and at the same time they wanted them to do activities not to lose families and to bring families in the institutions. Family based problems that psychological counsellors face in private special education institutions: Psychological counsellors firstly indicated that they did not have enough information about children’s disability condition and they had lack of ability. The families with disabled kids had difficult times because of their disability and so they reflected their anger to disabled kids again. The expectations of psychological counsellors that work in the private special education institutions: They mentioned the sharing of educational information. Following suggestions can be made as a result of this research for application and research: The responsibilities and duties of psychological counsellors that work in the private special education institutions should be clearer. The number of undergraduate special education lessons should be increased. Those that want to work at these institutions should at least have master degree and the content of these programs should be reformed considering needs. The psychological counselling services in these institutions should be regulated as rehabilitation counselling. Similar works should be done to establish problems and for precaution. The inservice training for psychological counsellors should be increased. This study was just done in Konya city. It is suggested that it should be applied in other cities, too.en_US
