The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between self compassion and value preferences of university students with regard to gender and grade variables. The relational survey method was administered in this study. The sample of this study consists of totally 534 students, 398 female and 145 male, attending various departments in Ahmet Keleşoğlu Education Faculty at Selcuk University. Schwartz Value Survey (SVS) (1992) and Neff’s selfcompassion scale (2003), adopted by Deniz, Kesici and Sümer (2008), were conducted to the participants. The Turkish version of Schwartz Value Survey (SVS) was adapted by Kuşdil and Kağıtçıbaşı (2000). The internal consistency of the scale was 0.51 and 0.77, respectively. The relationships between self-compassion and value preferences levels of university students were calculated by Pearson product-moment correlations coefficient. Also, t-test and variance analysis have been used to account for the gender and grade variables. Results indicated that the scores of the self compassion of university students was found to significantly and positively correlated with achievement, hedonism, self-direction, stimulation, universalism, benevolence, conformity and security sub-dimensions of Schwartz Value Survey (SVS).The findings of the study was also revealed that all sub-dimensions of the Schwartz Value Survey (SVS) was significantly differentiate with regard to gender variable. Hedonism, self direction, benevolence, conformity and security sub-dimensions of the Schwartz Value Survey (SVS) were significantly differentiate with regard to gender. Hedonism sub-dimension scores of the males were higher than females whereas other sub-dimensions scores of the females were higher than the males. It was also founded that there was no significant differentiation between self compassion and gender variable. Findings of the study showed that self direction, universalism, benevolence and security sub dimensions scores of the Schwartz Value Survey (SVS) were significantly differentiate with regard to grade level variable. The average scores of the third grade students were higher than first grade students. This study is more important for its aim, issue and sample rather than the others. Values arise as a criterion of one’s thought attitude and behavior and create an integral component of social integrality. Every issue in a society are perceived and evaluated in terms of values. Individuals internalize the society’s cultural values and use them as criteria for their judgments and choices. Findings of some studies support the results of this study. It is also thought that results of this study will contribute the studies on counseling, science and social fields and classroom management about the value preferences of teachers. For the further studies, focusing on different regions in terms of age and social characteristics is recommended.trinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessEğitimEğitim AraştırmalarıÜniversite öğrencilerinin öz-anlayışıları ile değer tercihlerinin incelenmesiAn investigation of university students’self compassion and value preferencesOther718924
