Nutrition of elite athletes is important for their performance, as well as physical and mental functions. Long-term vitamin deficiency is known to lead to a decrease in the performance of athletes. The present study aims to examine the effects of vitamin C supplementation on the distribution of some elements in the serum of individuals engaged in taekwondo. Methods. The study registered 7 male elite taekwondo players, whose mean age was 21.56 +/- 0.28 years, mean weight was 65.67 +/- 2.07 (kg) and mean duration of involvement in sports was 10-12 years. Subjects in the study were supplemented with 300 mg oral vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) for 6 weeks. Resting blood samples collected from all subjects twice, once before and once after supplementation, were analyzed to find out serum levels of cobalt, boron, cadmium, chromium, nickel, manganese, molybdenum, copper, iron, zinc, phosphorus, sodium, potassium and calcium (mg/L), using an atomic emission device. Result. Six-week vitamin C supplementation brought about a significant decrease in boron and potassium levels (p < 0.001) and an increase in iron levels (p < 0.001). Other parameters analyzed were not affected by vitamin C supplementation. Conclusions. The results of research have show that C vitamin supplementation in male taekwondo sportmen affects especially iron and boron metabolism, but has limited affects on serum levels of the other elementseninfo:eu-repo/semantics/closedAccessMartial artsVitaminsDietary supplementsMineralsEffect of vitamin C supplementation on various elements in elite taekwondo playersArticle6514956WOS:000305491500005Q4
