Öğe The current situation and problems with producing fruit nursery trees in Turkey(International Society for Horticultural Science, 2019) Karamürsel D.; Öztürk F.P.; Kaçal E.; Bayav A.; Emre M.; Oğuz C.; Karamürsel Ö.F.In this study, the current situation and problems in producing fruit trees on private nurseries in Turkey are articulated. The data for the study were acquired by interviewing private fruit tree nurseries from 16 provinces where 91% of the fruit tree nursery production is carried out. The sample size was determined by a stratified random sampling method. Problems faced by the nurseries in producing fruit trees were determined as marketing, infrastructure and input supplies. As the majority of the land required to produce nursery trees is either leased or contracted under a share-cropping system (53%), the shortage of land was the most significant infrastructure constraint. The supply of basic materials was an important problem faced by the nurseries if they were to be certified. Nurseries experienced problems in quality standards because of price instability in the market and irregular market demand, high transport prices, lack of capital, and governance issues associated with demanding procedures and lack of a qualified labor force. © 2019 International Society for Horticultural Science.
