The ability and utility of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging with different ‘b’ values in the differentiation of benign from malignant lung lesions
(Medical Science International, 2020) Elbir F.Ş.; Öztürk M.; Doğan S.
Purpose: To evaluate the ability and the utility of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with different ‘b’ values to visualise benign and malignant lung lesions, and to determine which ‘b’ value (b = 300, 500, or 1000 s/mm2) was most useful in differentiating benign from malignant lung lesions. Material and methods: A total of 100 patients (28 women, 72 men; mean age = 57.19 ± 13.44 years; age range = 20-83 years). Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) was obtained with ‘b’ values of 300, 500, and 1000 s/mm². The signal intensity of lesions on DWI images was analysed, and the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values of the lesions were calculated. MRI was performed in all patients after having presented at our department for thoracic computed tomography for various reasons. Results: A statistically significant difference in DWI signal scores was detected between benign and malignant lesions for all ‘b’ factors (p < 0.0001 for each). The sensitivity and specificity were 95% and 64%, respectively, when a score of 3 for b = 300 s/mm²; 90% and 69%, respectively, when a score of 3 for b = 500 s/mm²; and 84% and 74%, respectively, when a score of 3 for b = 1000 s/mm². ADC values showed significant differences between benign and malignant lesions for all ‘b’ factors (p < 0.0001 for each). Conclusions: Using ‘b’ values of 300, 500, and 1000 s/mm², DWI signal intensity scores and ADC values are effective methods for the differential diagnosis of malignant and benign pulmonary lesions. © Pol J Radiol 2020.

Comparative morphological, anatomical, and palynological studies on the genus Stachys L. sect. Ambleia Bentham (Lamiaceae) species in Turkey
    (2008) Dinç M.; Öztürk M.
In this study, comparative morphological, anatomical and palynological studies of Stachys L. sect. Ambleia Bentham species (Lamiaceae) in Turkey are carried out on the plants collected from their type localities. These species are Stachys cydni Kotschy ex Gemici & Leblebici and S. yildirimlii M. Dinç, which are highly local endemics. Morphologically, micromorphological features of the trichomes are studied. Trichome morphology appears to have a taxonomic value with respect to the results. The anatomical studies on cross-sections of stems, leaves, and surface sections of leaves are presented. According to the anatomical comparison between the 2 species, the pith structure of the stems, the cuticle thickness of the leaves, and stomatal distribution on the leaves are the distinguishing features of the species. Scanning electron microscope studies on the pollen grains show that exine ornamentation is clearly different in the 2 species. Whereas the pollen grains of S. yildirimlii have a retipilate exine ornamentation, those of S. cydni have a reticulate ornamentation. © TÜBİTAK.

Osteogenesis imperfecta in adult twins responded to treatment with pamidronate [Osteogenezis i?mperfektalı erişkin i?kizlerin pamidronat tedavisine olumlu cevabı]
    (Turkiye Klinikleri, 2011) Öztürk M.; Çakir M.
Bisphosphonates are strong inhibitors of bone resorption and are used in the treatment of osteoporosis. Bisphosphonates are known to be effective in prevention of fractures, improvement of bone mineral density as well as in relieving bone pain in osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) patients. Recent studies have shown that especially intravenous pamidronate may be more effective when given in childhood and adolescence. This effect was also shown in adult OI patients in some clinical trials. 22-year-old twin brothers known to have OI were admitted to our endocrinology and metabolism outpatient clinic. On medical history, OI was diagnosed at the age of three and for the last eight years, they were not able to walk and were using wheelchairs. On physical examination, blue sclerae and dentinogenesis imperfecta were detected in both patients. According to the expanded Sillence classification of OI, the clinical findings were consistent with type IV OI. Intravenous pamidronate treatment was given three times at four-month intervals, according to Montreal protocol. During this period, the patients were also doing isometric exercises and were on physical therapy, diet, and bioresonance therapy. At the end of one year, bone pain regressed significantly in both patients and they were able to walk independently. These outcomes demonstrate that in selected adult OI patients, intravenous pamidronate treatment may be beneficial in preventing bone fractures and relieving pain.
