Retrospective Evaluation of Anterior Restorations with Composite Resins Applied by Layering Method
(Selçuk Üniversitesi Sağlık Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2020) Abdulateef, Omar Faez Abdulateef; Çobanoğlu, Nevin
The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical behavior and performance of direct composite restorations made by using four different types of composite resin sets and layering technique in patients with various aesthetic problems in their anterior teeth, according to the criteria of Federation Dentaire Internationale (FDI) and color changes of direct composite veneer restorations with a spectrophotometer in addition to the FDI criteria. In this retrospective study, 227 direct composite restorations applied using GC Essentia (Microflled hybrid) (n=52), IPS Empress Direct( nanohybrid) (n=50), Filtek Ultimate (nanofill) (n=56) and Estelite ∑ Quick ( supra nanofill ) (n=69) were evaluated after one year using the FDI criteria. The color change of 57 restorations with direct composite veneers of the 227 restorations was also evaluated with a spectrophotometer. Statistical analysis of the data was applied using Fisher's Exact Test, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and one-way analysis of variance (One Way ANOVA). As a result of our study, only 12 of 227 direct composite restorations were considered unsuccessful. Failed restorations were either due to color mismatch or breakage. Filtek Ultimate (nanofill) composite showed more marginal discoloration rate compared to other composite types. All unsuccessful restorations due to color mismatch were seen in the Filtek Ultimate composite resin group, while unsuccessful restorations due to fracture were seen in the Estelite Sigma Quick (supra-nanofill) composite resin group. Some restorations in other composite resin types showed minor wear at the incisal edges, but did not affect the aesthetic appearance of the restorations. There was no difference in anatomical form, secondary caries and postoperative sensitivity in all composite types. There was no statistically significant difference between ΔE values of any of the composite resins types in our study (P> 0.05). According to the results of this short-term retrospective study, direct composite resin restorations made using the layering technique are a good option for the minimally invasive treatment of various aesthetic problems in the anterior teeth. The performance of IPS Empress Direct, Essentia, Estelite Sigma Quick composite resins in terms of color stability is better than Filtek Ultimate composite resins.
