Öğe Analysis of cancer cases in Konya(2005) Genç M.; Avunduk M.C.This study has been carried out to estimate the number of cancer patients and the distribution of cancer types in Konya for planning of the prevention activities and radiotherapy equipment more cost effectively. The cancer cases were analysed by reviewing the records of all pathology centres in the province of Konya to estimate the incidence and histological distribution of tumors and 1523 cancer cases were found to be diagnosed in a period of one year. Overall cancer incidence was higher in males than in females (Age Standardised incidence rates of 121.1 and 94.7 per 100.000, respectively). Non-melanoma skin cancer was the most common cancer for both gender. While bladder, lung, colorectal and stomach cancers were the most frequent cancers in men; breast, colorectal, stomach cancers were the leading tumors in women. These estimates in the present study reflect the current burden of cancer in the period of instructing a new radiotherapy department in Konya.Öğe A child with glomangioma and osteochondroma on the same leg: A case report(2008) Köksal Y.; Çalişkan U.; Reisli I.; Uçar C.; Avunduk M.C.Glomangioma is a rare neoplasm that typically occurs in soft tissue of the extremities, particularly the subungual region of the fingertip. Osteochondromas are benign proliferations composed of mature bone and a cartilaginous cap. A case involving a 9-year-old boy with two benign masses (glomangioma and osteochondroma) on his right leg is presented. To our knowledge, this is the first case of glomangioma associated with osteochondroma in a child that has been reported.Öğe Evaluation of phagocytic function of the spleen after splenic artery ligation in secondary hypersplenism(2003) Vatansev C.; Tekin S.; Şahin M.; Serdengeçti M.; Avunduk M.C.The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of splenic artery ligation on the phagocytic functions and morphology of the spleen in rabbits in which secondary hypersplenism was induced by splenic vein ligation (SVL). Thirty New Zealand-type rabbits were included in this study. The rabbits were separated into three groups of 10 subjects each. The first group underwent laparotomy, and the second and third groups underwent laparotomy + splenic vein ligation. At the end of the fourth week, the first and second groups underwent laparotomy while the third group underwent laparotomy + splenic artery ligation. At the end of the eighth week, 1 cc of blood was taken from all rabbits to determine hematological parameters. The rabbits were administered with 0.1 mCi/kg of Tc-99m sulfur colloid, and retention rates in the liver and spleen were determined. The spleens of the rabbits were removed and examined histopathologically. Median liver/spleen retention rates were found to be 26.2 count/pixel in the sham group, 29.1 count/pixel in group II and 55 count/pixel in group III. The retention rate in the spleen was significantly lower in group III (p = 0.0001). Leukocyte levels were similar among the groups while erythrocyte and thrombocyte levels were significantly lower in group II than in the other two groups (p = 0,0001). Histopathologically, wide congestion was observed in group II while extended fibrosis and necrosis were observed in the spleens of group III. Although the application of SAL in secondary hypersplenism cases reduces the severity of hypersplenism, it fails to improve the phagocytic function of the spleen.Öğe A rare presentation of true hermaphroditism: An abnormal inquinoscrotal mass(2007) Yurtçu M.; Aydo?du B.; Avunduk M.C.; Günel E.This study examined the differential diagnosis of inguinoscrotal masses and true hermaphroditism as well as incarcerated inguinal hernia in the differential diagnosis of abnormal inguinoscrotal masses. Inguinoscrotal masses are a rare presentation of true hermaphroditism. A child with an inguinoscrotal mass of the right groin and penoscrotal hypospadias was diagnosed. Our case suggested that abnormal inguinoscrotal masses occur in true hermaphroditism as well as incarcerated inguinal hernia. These congenital anomalies should be considered in the differential diagnosis of inguinoscrotal masses of the groin. © 2007 Neuroendocrinology Letters.
