    The Effects of Computer-Assisted Language Learning on Vocabulary Teaching in Distance Education for EFL Undergraduate Students in Turkey

    This study aims to investigate the effects of Computer-Assisted Language Learning on the vocabulary enhancement of the EFL undergraduate students in distance education. In the study, Quizlet and word lists were used to compare two different vocabulary learning methods. The study was conducted with 46 undergraduate students at the School of Foreign Languages at a private foundation university in Konya, Turkey. The current study adopted a sequential mixed-methods research design to enrich the collected numerical data with the perspectives of the students. The quantitative data was gathered through the Turkish version of the Online Learning Readiness Scale (OLRS) and the pre/post vocabulary tests arranged based on the course syllabus. The qualitative data was collected through a semi-structured interview comprised of five open-ended questions. The analysis of the quantitative data revealed that the participants’ readiness levels for online learning were high in each group. Considering the pre/post vocabulary tests scores of both groups, a significant difference was obtained between the two different vocabulary learning methods. Quizlet was more effective in the improvement of vocabulary knowledge in distance education rather than the word list method. In addition, the participants stated positive opinions towards employing a vocabulary learning tool in distance education. Quizlet was identified as useful, enjoyable, and practical by the participants. Moreover, the participants desire to continue using the tool to learn more vocabulary in the next semester. Finally, some implications and recommendations are presented for further research in view of the results of the current study
