Öğe Analysis of chromosomes 8 and 17 aneuploidies in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma by fluorescence in situ hybridization(WILEY, 2004) Öztürk, Kayhan; Acar, Hasan; Durmuş, Ercan; Öztürk, Adnan; Mutlu, NecipObjectives/Hypothesis: The objectives were to investigate chromosomes 8 and 17 numerical aberrations by using fluorescence in situ hybridization in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and also to determine whether there is any association between chromosomes 8 and 17 aneuploidies and TNM classification and subgroups of laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas. Study Design: Descriptive study. Methods: Tumor and control samples were taken from 23 patients with LSCC by surgical operation. Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis with chromosomes 8- and 17-specific a-satellite DNA probes was performed on the interphase nuclei. Results. The percentages for chromosomes 8 and 17 aneuploidies were 33% (SD = 25.7%) (median value, 26.2%; range, 3.5-81.8%) and 19.2% (SD = 15.8%) (median value, 9.8%; range, 3.6%-63.7%), respectively. There was a significant difference between stage 2 and stage 3 (P < .05) and between stage 2 and stage 4 for chromosome 8 aneuploidy (P < .05) but not for chromosome 17 aneuploidy (P > .05). There was also a significant difference for the T classification for chromosome 8 aneuploidy (P < .05) but not for chromosome 17 (P > .05). Conclusion: Chromosome 8 aneuploidy may be related to stage and T classification of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and its progression.Öğe Analysis of chromosomes 8 and 17 aneuploidies laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma by fluorescence in situ hybridization(2004) Öztürk, Kayhan; Acar, Hasan; Durmuş, Ercan; Öztürk, Adnan; Mutlu, NecipObjectives/Hypothesis: The objectives were to investigate chromosomes 8 and 17 numerical aberrations by using fluorescence in situ hybridization in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and also to determine whether there is any association between chromosomes 8 and 17 aneuploidies and TNM classification and subgroups of laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas. It is more common in jobs that require faceto-face contact with people, such as dentists. In this study, we researched the burnout levels of dentists working in Turkey and evaluated them according to gender, title, place of work, and experience. Methods: Burnout scores were determined by the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory. This questionnaire was delivered to dentists online through various social media applications. We analyzed data via SigmaPlot Software. Results: The answers of a total of 477 dentists were considered valid. We observed that 73,5% of them had high burnout scores. A statistically significant difference was found in the evaluations according to the title and workplace. Experience and gender do not statistically affect burnout scores. Conclusion: It has been observed that dentists working in Turkey are more likely to face burnout syndrome at high levels. It has been predicted that patient burden may be closely related to burnout syndrome.Öğe Deneysel olarak oluşturulan kafatası kemik defektlerine yerleştirilen doğal mercan dens ve pöröz hidroksilapatinin histopatolojik ve radyolojik olarak değerlendirilmesi(Selçuk Üniversitesi Sağlık Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 1995) Durmuş, Ercan; Uçkan, İ. Bu üç materyalden, özellikle rezorbe olan HA par- tiküllerinin, membranöz kemik defektlerinde iyileşmeyi arttırdığı ve hız landırdığı gözlendi.Öğe Desmoplastic Ameloblastoma in the Mandible(LIPPINCOTT WILLIAMS & WILKINS, 2003) Durmuş, Ercan; Kalayci, Abdullah; Öztürk, Adnan; Günhan, ÖmerThe desmoplastic variant of ameloblastoma (DA) is characterized by unique histological and radiographic features. It is histologically characterized by an abundance of densely collagenous stroma with small nests and strands of likely compressed odontogenic epithelium. Although radiographic examination of ameloblastomas usually reveals unilocular or multilocular radiolucency, DA may appear as a mixed radiopaque-radiolucent lesion. In this case report, a 68-year-old man who had a complaint of a mass in his right mental region is presented. The patient was unable to wear his prothesis because of an underlying swelling. An incisional biopsy was performed. Microscopic examination of the surgical specimen revealed large epithelial islands of ameloblast-like cells within increased, dense, collagenous desmoplastic stroma. Histopathologically, it was diagnosed as DA. Under local anesthesia, the lesion was enucleated. There was no recurrence after 32 months of follow-up.Öğe The Evaluation of Dentist’s Knowledge of Antibiotics and Prophylaxis in Turkey(Selçuk Üniversitesi, 2023 Aralık) Gürses, Gökhan; Gür, Rabia; Aktı, Ahmet; Küçükkolbaşı, Hasan; Durmuş, ErcanIntroduction: Inappropriately prescribed antibiotics accelerate the formation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This circumstance creates a problematic situation in terms of public health. This study aims to measure dentists' antibiotic/prophylaxis knowledge and awareness of antibiotic resistance in Turkey based on two case scenarios. Materials Methods: Dentists in Turkey are invited by open invitation posts on various social media applications for our twelve-question online survey. The scoring was shaped based on answers to measure antibiotic/prophylaxis knowledge. The collected data were statistically analyzed by SPSS Statistics 22. Results: 321 participants answered all questions included in the study. The statistical analyses showed a significant difference based on knowledge of antibiotics and prophylaxis in the evaluations according to gender, title, graduation time, and workplace. Conclusion: Inappropriate antibiotic prescription by dentists is common in Turkey. Dentists should receive more undergraduate lessons, and taking reminder antibiotic courses at regular intervals after graduation can contribute to keeping their knowledge up to date.Öğe Evaluation of Osteoblastic Activity Around Dental Implants Using Bone Scintigraphy(Wiley, 2010) Kalaycı, Abdullah; Durmuş, Ercan; Taştekin, Güngör; Işık, Kubilay; İnan, ÖzgürObjectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the osteoblastic activity around delayloaded intraosseous dental implants using nuclear medicine imaging techniques. Material and methods: Seven totally edentulous patients (two females and five males, between 48 and 57 years of age) were included in the study. Two implants were inserted into mandibular canine regions and removable prostheses were produced after 3 months. Whole-body bone scintigraphies with 20 mCi technetium 99m labelled methylene diphosphonate were taken from the patients before implant insertion, 3 months after implant placement just before the prostheses were made and 1 year after implant placement. Standardized count/pixel (SC/P) rates were calculated for each patient. Preimplantation SC/P values were compared with the 3- and 12-month values. Three-month values were compared with the 12-month values as well. Results: SC/P rates in the third month were significantly higher (Po0.05) than preoperative values and the SC/P rates of the 12th month were significantly lower (Po0.05) than 3-month values. The SC/P rates of the 12th month were relatively higher than first scintigraphies but the difference was insignificant (P40.05). Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, in which delayed loading was applied, we showed that osteoblastic activity persisted more in delay loaded implants than immediate and early loading. After 1 year, there was no cellular activity around two implants and this implied that two implants were sufficient for a total prosthesis.Öğe The evaluation of safety and analgesic efficacy of paracetamol and ibuprofen followed by impacted third molar surgery [Gömülü üçüncü molar diş ameliyatı öncesinde uygulanan parasetamol ve i?buprofenin a?rı kesici etkinli?i ve güvenli?i açısından de?erlendirilmesi](TIP ARASTIRMALARI DERNEGI, 2010) Özkan, Birkan Taha; Durmuş, Ercan; Kalaycı, Abdullah; Kurban, Sevil; Akça, Cennet NeslihanAim: The aim of this prospective, randomised, single-blind, single center, parallel group study was to compare the analgesic effects and safety of a single starting dose of soluble ibuprofen and 2 g of intravenous paracetamol for postoperative pain management in patients undergoing surgical removal of lower impacted third molar. Method: 30 patients who referred for surgical removal of bilateral impacted lower third molar teeth were included in the study. The patients were divided in to two groups. In the early preoperative period, the patients received a single starting dose of either soluble ibuprofen 400 mg dissolved in 100 ml of water or 15-min intravenous infusion of paracetamol 2 gram. Surgery in each patient was performed twice, 1 impacted tooth was being removed at a time and another one was being removed 2 weeks later. Trismus, safety variables and hepatotoxicity and analgesic efficacy were evaluated. Result: The analgesic efficacy over a 24-hour period was of statistically no significant difference between 2 groups but clinical data shows that the analgesic efficacy of paracetamol group was greater than ibuprofen group. As for the mean trismus values, there was no statistically significant difference between groups. The administered dosages of the analgesics did not lead to hepatocellular injury and biochemical abnormality. Conclusion: Consequently, both administered dosages of drugs can safely be used as a single starting doses. In order to obtain more better results with analgesic efficacy and safety in use, more trials are needed for administering higher doses of paracetamol and ibuprofen.Öğe Evaluation of the Potential Beneficial Effects of Ostrich Eggshell Combined With Eggshell Membranes in Healing of Cranial Defects in Rabbits(Sage Publications Ltd, 2003) Durmuş, Ercan; Çelik, İlhami; Öztürk, A.; Özkan, Y.; Aydın, M. F.Potential beneficial effects of outer and inner ostrich eggshell membranes alone and in combination with the shell powder on bone regeneration in cranial defects of 18 rabbits were investigated using radiological, clinical and histological methods. Three 6 mm wide, half-thickness defects were made in the calvarial bones of each rabbit. One defect remained empty as a control; prepared eggshell membranes were extended across the other two defects; and prepared eggshell powder was inserted inside the membrane in one case. Either alone or in combination with eggshell powder, the outer and inner ostrich eggshell membranes produced little adjunctive effect under the conditions and duration of this experiment.Öğe Gingivada pleksiform nörofibroma(2004) Savaş, Hatice; Karabacakoğlu, Aydın; Karaköse, Serdar; Durmuş, ErcanNeurofibromatosis type1 is the most common autosomal dominant disorder of the nerve sheath and best defined phakomatosis. It usually affects skeletal system, central nervous system, eye, endocrine gland and cardiovascular system. Gingival involvement is very rare. We report radiological findings of three patients with plexiform neurofibroma who had diffuse, unilateral gingival involvement.Öğe Interleukin-i Beta, Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha Levels and Neutrophil Elastase Activity in Peri-İmplant Crevicular Fluid - Correlation With Clinical Parameters and Effect of Smoking(WILEY, 2002) Ataoğlu, Hanife; Alptekin, Nilgün Özlem; Haliloğlu, Seyfullah; Gürsel, Mihtikar; Ataoğlu, Tamer; Serpek, Behiç; Durmuş, ErcanThe aim of this study was to determine interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) levels and neutrophil elastase (NE) activity in peri-implant crevicular fluid (PICF) of smoker and nonsmoker patients, and to investigate their relationships with clinical parameters. A total of 42 endosseous root-form dental implants of 14 patients were clinically examined by modified Plaque index (PI), modified Gingival index (Gl) and probing depth (PD). Smoking habits of the patients were recorded. PICF of implants were collected by Periopaper strips and IL-1beta, TNF-alpha levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). NE was analyzed with a neutrophil specific chromogenic substrate, N-methoxysuccinyl-Ala-Ala-Pro-Val-p-nitroanilide. The cytokine and enzyme levels in PICF were expressed as total amount/activity and as concentrations. NE activity in PICF significantly correlated with GI and PD, and IL-1beta levels with GI and PICF volume (P < 0.05). The correlations were stronger when the PICF levels were expressed as total IL-1beta amount and as total NE activity. The implants with inflamed gingiva (GI > 1) had higher levels of IL-1beta and NE activity than implants with noninflamed or slightly inflamed gingiva (GI less than or equal to 1) (P < 0.05). Total NE activity in implants with deep pockets (PD > 3 mm) was greater than the implants with shallow pockets (PD :5 3 mm) (P < 0.05). The implants of smoker patients had significantly lower PICF NE activity and IL-1beta levels, and significantly higher TNF-alpha levels than the implants of nonsmokers (P < 0.05). The findings of the present study indicate that NE activity and IL-1beta levels in PICF may be used to measure implant health status of patients who do not smoke.Öğe Kompleks ve Kompound Odontoma, 22 Vaka Sunumu(Selçuk Üniversitesi, 2022 Aralık) Gürses, Gökhan; Ataseven, Aslı; Aktı, Ahmet; Kalaycı, Abdullah; Durmuş, ErcanAmaç: Odontomalar çenelerde en sık görülen odontojenik kökenli iyi huylu tümörlerdir. Yavaş büyürler ve agresif davranış göstermezler. Genellikle asemptomatiktirler ve sıklıkla rutin radyografi sırasında bulunurlar. Kompleks ve kompaund odontoma olarak ikiye ayrılmaktadır. Bu vaka serisinde 8’i kompleks 14'ü kompaund, toplam 22 odontoma vakasının cerrahi tedavisinin anlatılması amaçlanmıştır. Erken teşhis ile morbidite ve maliyet azaltılabilir.Öğe Management of Alveolar Clefts Using Dento-osseous Transport Distraction Osteogenesis(E H ANGLE EDUCATION RESEARCH FOUNDATION, INC, 2003) Dolanmaz, Doğan; Karaman, Ali İhya; Durmuş, Ercan; Malkoç, SıddıkThis article evaluates the usage of distraction osteogenesis (DO) in the treatment of cleft alveoli. The procedure was carried out on eight alveolar clefts of five patients between the ages of 17 and 25 years. Three patients had bilateral alveolar clefts (BAC) and two patients had unilateral alveolar clefts (UAC). DO was carried out bilateral to the palatal segments for the BAC patients and unilateral to the lesser segment for the UAC patients. A custom-made tooth-borne distractor was used. The average amount of distraction was eight mm (range, 5-11.5 mm). The average amount of distal movement of the anchorage teeth was 0.8 mm (range, 0-2 mm). The average amount of inclination changes of the transport segments and anchorage teeth was 7.6degrees (range, 2-17.5degrees) and 3.3degrees (range, 0-9degrees), respectively. Two important problems were observed attributable to the method. First, the transport segment was docked in a more superior position at the end of distraction process. This undesirable movement Also changed the inclination of the teeth in the transport segment and increased tooth tipping. Removing the device in the second week of the consolidation period and retracting the segment to its ideal position orthodontically solved these problems. Second, the bony defect on the nasal side of the alveolar cleft could not be completely closed. This method for repairing small or large alveolar clefts is a simple, cost-effective, and useful treatment option. However, repairing the alveolar cleft without grafts seems to be impossible when using a tooth-borne device.Öğe Prosthetic Rehabilitation of Partial Ear Defect: 2 Case Reports(Springer India, 2014) Subaşı, Gülce; Alnıaçık, Gamze; Kalaycı, Abdullah; Akman, Serhan; Durmuş, ErcanThe loss or absence of an auricle may result from trauma, disease or congenital anomalies and causes a considerable aesthetic problem. If the deformity involves the external auditory canal, it can affect hearing. This case report describes the surgical and prosthetic treatment of two patients with partial defects of their right external ears from different causes. Implant-retained auricular prostheses fabricated from heat-temperature-vulcanised silicone were used in both the cases; they were designed to be harmonious with the remaining tissues. The patients experienced improved retention, aesthetics, hearing and quality of life with these prostheses. During the approximately 3 year follow-up, both the prostheses were re-fabricated once; however, problems related to implant stability and peri-implant tissue health were not encountered. © 2013, Indian Prosthodontic Society.Öğe Recurrent Multifocal Langerhans Cell Eosinophilic Granuloma of the Jaws: Report of a Case(W B Saunders Co, 1996) Uçkan, Sina; Gürol, Muhtar; Durmuş, ErcanEosinophilic granuloma is a member of the group of diseases that have similar clinical and histopathologic features, named histiocytosis X by Lichtenstein in 1953.1s2 Other members of the group are HandSchuller-Christian disease (chronic disseminated histiocytosis X) and Letterer-Siwe disease (acute disseminated histiocytosis X).Öğe Use of the fertilized hen's egg in the evaluation of embryotoxicity of dental alloys(WILEY-LISS, 2005) Durmuş, Ercan; İnan, Özgür; Çelik, İlhami; Sur, Emrah; Özkan, Yasemin; Acar, Aslı; Aydın, Mehmet FarukIn this study, embryotoxic effects of five commercially available dental alloys were investigated by using fertilized hens' eggs. One sample of each alloy was conditioned in one of the conditioning media, physiological saline (PS), 0.1 M phosphate-buffered saline (PBS, pH 7.4), and 0.1 M protein (3% bovine serum albumin, BSA) containing PBS (pH 6.8), respectively. The test solutions were injected into the fertilized hen's eggs via air sac at the beginning of the incubation. Various concentrations of a highly embryotoxic substance, AFB(1), was also used as positive control test material. Mortality of the AFB(1) treatment groups increased with increasing concentrations of AFB(1), and the mortality values were significantly (p < 0.05) higher than those of the controls and eluent injected groups. The eluents of five commercially available dental alloys tested in the study did not have significant embryotoxic effects. Cu- and Pd-containing alloys displayed relatively high but statistically insignificant embryotoxic effects. Chick embryo might be used in determination of the embryotoxic effects of the dental alloys with its several advantages. Nevertheless, the test should be further standardized and new methods such as micronucleus test showing possible genotoxic effects of the materials should be used. (C) 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
