Öğe Conflict resolution and third parties intervention : An analysis of Mindanao conflict in the philippines(Selçuk Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü, 2021) Eldani, Mur Hamida; Kaya, Aslıgül SarıkamışThis thesis examines the role of third parties in the resolution of the Mindanao Conflict by asking the question of what are the roles and contributions of third parties in Mindanao Conflict in the Philippines. It primarily focuses on the roles of Malaysia, Libya, Japan, Indonesia, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the International Contact Group (ICG). The conflict in Mindanao emerged due to interrelated reasons of colonial annexation and injustices. Moros living in Mindanao suffered from injustices, economic problems, and marginalization, and experiences of social, cultural, political, and economic disparities. The Moro people are the Muslim minorities living in the Southern Part of the Philippines. They are divided into distinct tribes but shared a common culture and Islamic faith. Hence, the conflict occurred as Moros fought for justice, self-determination, and independence against the GRP. This thesis argues that OIC, Libya, and Malaysia played vital roles in mediation and providing humanitarian and financial support to the Moros. Nevertheless, OIC and Libya's roles were only particular during the negotiation, and they did not involve in monitoring concurred agreements of the disputants. Indonesia was engaged in facilitation but had limited participation. Japan provided development aid and supported peace building and thus contributed to rebuilding the Moros situation in Mindanao. ICG's facilitation role was also beneficial in monitoring agreements and channeling international support to resolve the Mindanao conflict. Hence, the participation of the third parties through mediation, facilitation, and humanitarian aiding led to negotiation and diplomatic means of resolving conflict. The third parties contributed to the disputant's realization of their shared interest for peace.
