Öğe Changes in Levels of Serum Insulin, C-Peptide And Glucose After Electroacupuncture and Diet Therapy in Obese Women(World Scientific Publ Co Pte Ltd, 2006) Cabıoğlu, Mehmet Tuğrul; Ergene, NeyhanOur purpose was to investigate the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) therapy on body weight and on levels of serum insulin, c-peptide and glucose in obese women. 52 healthy women were included in this study and were allocated into three groups: 1) Placebo EA group (n = 15; mean age = 41.8 +/- 4.6 and mean body mass index {BMI} = 33.2 +/- 3.5); 2) EA group (n = 20; mean age = 42.1 +/- 4.4 and BMI = 35.9 +/- 3.6) and 3) Diet restriction group (n = 20; mean age = 42.9 +/- 4.3 and BMI = 34.7 +/- 2.7). EA was applied to the ear points Hunger and Shen Men on alternating days and to the body points LI4, LI11, St36 and St44 once a day for 30 minutes over 20 days. Diet restriction that entailed a 1450 kilocalorie (kcal) diet program was applied to the three groups for 20 days. An increase in weight loss was observed when weight loss in the EA group (p < 0.000) was compared to that in the diet restricted and placebo EA groups using the Tukey HSD test. There were increases in the serum insulin (p < 0.001) and c-peptide levels (p < 0.000) in the women treated with EA compared to those in the women treated with the placebo EA and diet restriction groups. A decrease was observed in the glucose levels (p < 0.01) in both the EA and diet restriction groups compared to those in the placebo EA group. Our results suggest that EA therapy is an effective method in treating obesity. EA therapy also helps serum glucose levels to decrease through the increase of serum insulin and c-peptide levels.Öğe Changes in Serum Leptin and Beta Endorphin Levels with Weight Loss by Electroacupuncture and Diet Restriction in Obesity Treatment(World Scientific Publ Co Pte Ltd, 2006) Cabıoğlu, Mehmet Tuğrul; Ergene, NeyhanThis study aims to investigate the role of changes in leptin and beta endorphin (BE) levels in weight loss following electroacupuncture (EA) application in obesity treatment. EA was applied to 20 females who were 41.45 +/- 4.71 years old and had a body mass index of 36.00 +/- 2.66; and a diet program was applied to 20 females who were 42.30 +/- 4.35 years old and had a body mass index of 34.90 +/- 3.21. There was a 4.5% weight reduction in the patients with EA application, whereas patients on diet restriction had a 3.1% weight reduction. A decrease of loss of body weight was observed in the EA group (p < 0.000) when compared against the diet restricted group. A decrease of serum leptin levels (p < 0.000) and an increase in the serum BE (p < 0.05) levels were observed in the EA group compared to the diet restricted group. In this study, reduced serum leptin levels paralleling to weight loss were observed in the EA group. Furthermore, it is thought that in the EA applied group, increasing serum BE level probably enhanced the lipolitic activity which may have caused weight loss in obese people by mobilizing energy stores. It may be considered that the EA application with diet restriction in obesity treatment is more effective than the diet restriction alone.Öğe Correlation Between Metabolic Syndrome and Serum Ghrelin Levels in Bipolar Patients(AVES, 2010) Kalenderoğlu, Aysun; Savaş, Haluk A.; Gergerlioğlu, H. Serdar; Başaralı, Kemal; Yumru, Mehmet; Selek, Salih; Büyükbaş, Sadık; Ergene, NeyhanAmaç: Bu araştırmada ikiuçlu bozukluk hastalarında serum ghrelin düzeyleri ve Metabolik Sendrom (MetS) arasında bir ilişkinin olup olmadığının incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bulgular: Çalışmaya alınan bipolar hastaların %51.7'si (n=31) sadece atipik an- tipsikotik (AA) tedavisi alırken, %48.8'ü (=29) sadece duygudurum düzenleyeci- si (DD) kullanıyordu. Bu sonucun kompansatuar bir mekanizma ile ilişkili olabileceği ya da hastalığı özgü farklı parametrelerin rol alabileceği düşünüldü.Öğe Determination of the Heart Rate Deflection Point by The Dmax Method(Edizioni Minerva Medica, 1996) Kara, Mehmet; Gökbel, Hakkı; Bediz, Cem; Ergene, Neyhan; Üçok, Kağan; Uysal, HüseyinObjective, Conconi et al, proposed that the point where heart rate departed from linearity in an incremental exercise test was a good indicator of the anaerobic: threshold, However, the heart rate deflection points (HRDPs) can not be determined in many subjects, The aim of this study was to determine the heart rate deflection point by the Dmax method and to compare it with the conventional linear method, Setting. The study was performed in the Exercise Physiology Laboratory in the Faculty of Medicine, Selcuk University, Participants, Thirthy-two untrained males (aged 18-22) performed a maximal exercise test on a cycle ergometer, Results. The deflection from linearity of HR could not be detected in nine subjects (28%) by the linear method, The HRDPs could be detected in all subjects by the Dmax method, It was observed that the HR values in the HRDPs determined by both methods were close to the maximal HR values (approximately 90% of maximum), There were high correlations and no differences (p more than 0.05) between the deflection points expressed as oxygen uptake, HR and work rate determined by two methods (correlation coefficients 0.93, 0.93, 0.97, respectively, p less than 0.001), Conclusions. The Dmax method is more useful than linear method, The HRDPs of all the people can easily and objectively be found by this method.Öğe DOES PREOPERATIVE ADMINISTRATION OF ALLOPURINOL PROTECT THE LUNGS FROM ISCHEMIA-REPERFUSION INJURY OCCURED DURING CARDIOPULMONARY BYPASS?(SPRINGER TOKYO, 2009) Ergene, Neyhan; Gormus, Zulfikare Isik; Celik, Jale Bengi; Gormus, Niyazi; Solak, Hasan[Abstract not Available]Öğe The effect of 3 ', 4 '-dihydroxyflavonol on lipid peroxidation in brain ischemia-reperfusion damage in rat(WILEY-BLACKWELL, 2015) Çalışkan, Merve; Moğulkoç, Rasim; Baltacı, Abdülkerim Kasım; Menevşe, Esma; Ergene, Neyhan[Abstract not Available]Öğe Effect of 3’-4’-dihydroxyflavonol on lipid per oxidation in experimental renal ischemia-reperfusion in rats(Pakistan Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 2019) Koç, Aynur; Ergene, Neyhan; Baltacı, Abdülkerim Kasım; Moğulkoç, RasimThis study aimed to examine the affects of 3’-4’-dihydroxyflavonol (DiOHF) on lipid peroxidation in experimental renal ischemia-reperfusion. The research was conducted on Wistar-albino type male rat. The experimental groups were formed as 1.Control; 2.Sham; 3.Ischemia; 4.Ischemia+reperfusion; 5.DiOHF+Ischemia; 6.Ischemia+ DiOHF + reperfusion. The highest tissue glutathione levels were found in groups 5 and 6. Groups 1 and 2, which were control and sham groups respectively, had the lowest tissue GSH values. Ischemia group was found to have the highest tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) level. Tissue MDA levels in group 4 were lower than those in group 3, however, higher than the levels in all other groups. Erythrocyte GSH levels in groups 5 and 6 were higher than the levels in all other groups. Group 4 has highest plasma MDA values. Plasma MDA levels in group 3 were lower than the levels in Group 4, but higher than those in other groups. The results of the study indicate that intraperitoneal DiOHF administration inhibits lipid per oxidation that intensifies in the case of renal ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats. © 2019 Pakistan Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Fifty-eight women were studied in 3 groups as follows: 1) Placebo acupuncture (n = 15; mean age = 41.47 +/- 4.61, and mean body mass index {BMI} = 33.43 +/- 3.10); 2) Electroacupuncture (EA) (n = 20; mean age = 40.55 +/- 5.30, and BMI = 35.65 +/- 3.84) and 3) Diet restriction groups (n = 23; mean age = 42.91 +/- 4.02, and BMI = 34.78 +/- 3.29). EA was performed using the ear points, Hungry, Shen Men and Stomach the body points, Hegu (LI4), Quchi (LI 11), Tianshu (St 25), Zusanli (St 36), Neiting (St 44) and Taichong (Liv 3) for 20 days. Intragroup comparisons were made by using paired samples t-test whereas intergroup differences were investigated by the two-way variation analysis and LSD test. There was a 4.7% (p < 0.001) weight reduction in patients with electroacupuncture application, whereas patients in diet restriction had a 2.9% (p < 0.001) weight reduction. There were significant decreases in lipoprotein A (p < 0.05) and apolipoprotein B (p < 0.05) levels in the EA compared to the control group and no changes in apolipoprotein A levels was observed in EA, diet and placebo acupuncture groups. EA therapy may be a useful approach for the treatment of obesity for both losing weight and lowing the risk factors for cardiovascular disease associated with obesity, since this application may decrease the plasma lipoprotein A and apolipoprotein B levels.Öğe Electroacupuncture treatment of obesity with psychological symptoms(TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 2007) Cabioglu, Mehmet Tugrul; Ergene, Neyhan; Tan, UnerThe aim was to study the effect of placebo EA, electroacupuncture (EA), and diet on obesity and accompanying psychological symptoms. One hundred and sixty-five volunteer women participated in the study. There were three groups: (i) Placebo EA, (ii) EA, and (iii) diet restriction group. EA was performed by using three ear and six body points. There was a 4.8% reduction in weight of patients with EA application, whereas patients with a diet restriction and placebo EA had a 2.5% and 2.7% weight reduction, respectively. There were significant decreases in phobia, anger, anxiety, obsession, paranoid symptoms, and depression in the EA group compared to those of the placebo EA and diet groups. It was suggested that electroacupuncture may be an effective therapy for obesity including the psychological signs and symptoms in women.Öğe Preventive Role of Magnesium on Skeletal Muscle Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury-an Experimental Study(HUMANA PRESS INC, 2009) Görmüş, Zülfikare Işık; Ergene, Neyhan; Toy, Hatice; Baltacı, Abdülkerim Kasım; Moğulkoç, RasimThe present study aims to explore whether Mg infusion has a preventive effect on ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats. A total of 20 Sprague-Dawley-type adult male rats were used. In group 1 (control), 0.9% isotonic solution was administered. In group 2 (experiment), magnesium sulfate (0.5 mg per 100 g) was administered. Ischemia was induced for 15 min for the two groups. Magnesium (Mg), interleukin 8 (IL-8), and malondialdehyde levels were analyzed in blood, while edema, neutrophil infiltration, eosinophilia, loss of striation, and nucleolization were evaluated in histopathological examination. Mg levels in the experiment group were higher than those in the control group after ischemia-reperfusion (p < 0.05). In the control group, postischemia and postreperfusion IL-8 values were higher than preoperative values (p < 0.05). As for eosinophilia and loss of striation values, these were higher in the experiment group after ischemia-reperfusion than the values in the control group (p < 0.05). Histopathologically, Mg infusion cannot prevent the tissue injury triggered in ischemia-reperfusion periods. Eosinophilia can be one of the major and earliest markers of ischemia-reperfusion injury.Öğe Serum IgG, IgA, IgM, and IgE levels after electroacupuncture and diet therapy in obese women(WORLD SCIENTIFIC PUBL CO PTE LTD, 2007) Cabioglu, Mehmet T.; Ergene, Neyhan; Surucu, H. Selcuk; Celik, H. Hamdi; Findik, DuyguWe investigated the effect of acupuncture therapy on obese women's body weight and peripheral blood levels of serum immunoglobulin G (IgG), immunoglobulin A (IgA), immunoglobulin M (IgM), and immunoglobulin E (IgE). Sixty-three healthy women were assigned into 3 groups: placebo electroacupuncture (n = 13; mean age, 40.5 +/- 4.2 years; body mass index [BMI], 33.5 +/- 4.2), diet restriction (n = 23; mean age, 42.9 +/- 4.0 years; BMI, 34.6 +/- 2.9), and electroacupuncture (n = 24; mean age, 40.1 +/- 5.9 years; BMI, 33.9 +/- 2.7). Electroacupuncture was applied to the Hunger and Shen Men ear points and to the LI 4, LI 11, St 36, St 44, and Ren 6 body points for 30 min once daily for 20 days. A restricted diet of 1400 kilocalories was given to participants in all 3 groups for 20 days. Weight was lost significantly in subjects in the electroacupuncture group compared to those in the diet restriction and placebo electroacupuncture groups (p < 0.000, Tukey test). Modulations in serum IgG (p < 0.001) were apparent in women treated with electroacupuncture compared with women treated with placebo electroacupuncture and restricted diet only. No significant changes were seen in serum IgA, IgM, and IgE levels among the 3 groups. Our results suggest that electroacupuncture can be effectively used to treat obesity. We also observed a modulating effect of serum IgG, which is associated with weight loss, in patients in the electroacupuncture group.Öğe Smoking cessation after acupuncture treatment(TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 2007) Cabioglu, Mehmet Tugrul; Ergene, Neyhan; Tan, UnerAcupuncture is applied, especially in treatment of pain, hemiplegia, obesity, and psychological illnesses including addiction. Recently, ear and body acupuncture have been frequently used in the treatment of smoking. An increase in levels of endorphin, enkephalin, epinephrine, norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine in the central nervous system and plasma has been reported as the most important mechanism of acupuncture. That is, acupuncture application may increase the levels of endorphin, enkephalin, epinephrine, norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine in the central nervous system and plasma. The authors think that acupuncture application provides the patients with deterioration in the taste of smoking, decrease in desire of smoking, and the obstruction of psychological symptoms that appear as a result of smoking cessation. Because of these effects it is presumed that acupuncture application may be used as an important method for smoking cessation treatment.Öğe Zinc Deficiency and Supplementation in Ovariectomized Rats: Their Effect on Serum Estrogen and Progesterone Levels and Their Relation to Calcium and Phosphorus(Univ Karachi, 2009) Sunar, Füsun; Baltacı, Abdulkerim Kasım; Ergene, Neyhan; Moğulkoç, RasimThe aim of this study is to examine how zinc deficiency or supplementation affects estrogen and progesterone and calcium and phosphorus levels in the serum. The study was carried out on 40 adult female rats of Spraque-Dawley species. The rats were allocated to four groups: Group 1: Control, Group 2: Ovariectomized (OVX) control. Group 3: OVX-Zinc-supplemented. Group 4: OVX-Zinc-deficient. Blood samples were taken from the experimental animals by decapitation method and analyzed in terms of estrogen, progesterone, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and zinc levels. Group 1 had the highest estrogen levels (p<0.05). Estrogen levels in group 3 were higher than those in groups 2 and 4 (p<0.05). The lowest estrogen levels were found in group 4 (p<0.05). Progesterone levels were higher in group I than in groups 2, 3 and 4 and the same parameter in group 3 was higher than those in groups 2 and 4. The highest calcium and phosphorus levels were obtained in groups I and 3 (p<0.05). Calcium and phosphorus levels in group 2 were higher than those in group 4 (p<0.05). There was no difference among groups with regard to magnesium levels. Group 3 had the highest serum zinc levels (p<0.05). Zinc levels in group I were higher than those in groups 2 and 4 and the levels in group 2 were higher than those in group 4. Findings of the study show that zinc deficiency causes a significant decrease in calcium and phosphorus levels and that zinc supplementation prevents these adversities in ovariectomized rats.
