Haemodynamic and biochemical effects of medetomidine-isoflurane and medetomidine-sevoflurane anaesthesia in horses
    (Veterinary Practitioner, 2013) Arican M.; Erol H.; Esin E.
The aim of the study was intended to evaluate the effects of metedomidine-isoflurane and metedomidine-sevoflurane anaesthesia on haemodynamic, biochemical parameters and intraocular pressure. A total of 12 healty horses with mean body weights 438+ 51 kg, divided into two groups were used as a study materials. In first group metedomidine, ketamine-midazolam and isoflurane was used and in second group metedomidine, ketamine-midazolam and sevoflurane was used. Premedication, Medetomidine 7 µg/ml i/v (5 mg/ ml) midazolam+ ketamine (100 mg/ml), was induced by i/v administration. Inhalation anaesthesia was performed with isoflurane or sevoflurane. Body weights of animals were weighed prior to anaesthesia. Haematologic assessments were recorded (0 minutes). During the anaesthesia within 5, 15, 30 and 60 minutes respiratory system findings, the body temperature, cardiovascular system findings, arterial blood pressure with indirect methods of evaluating and ECG measurement were recorded. There were no statistical differences for the two groups (P>0.05). Blood gases, electrolyte parameters in both groups were not changed. Intraocular pressure measurements and liver enzymes levels were found in the reference values. In a conclusion, metedomidine-isoflurane and metedomidine-sevoflurane both anesthetics were appeared to have minimum complications for horses. Although, metedomidine-sevoflurane provided deep and relevant anaesthesia for cardiopulmoner affects. © 2018, Veterinary Practitioner. All rights reserved.
