Öğe Clinical and Surgical Features of Eyes With Retained Lens Fragments During Cataract Surgery and Treatment Results at 6 Months(2009) Kerimoğlu, H.; Kamış, Ü.; Adam, M.; Özkağnıcı, A.; Gündüz, K.; Okudan, S.Purpose: To determine the clinical and surgical features of eyes with retained lens fragments during cataract surgery managed by pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and to evaluate the treatment results at 6-month follow-up. Mateirals and Methods: Medical records of 29 patients who underwent PPV for retained lens fragments and were followed-up at least for 6 months between June 2005 and December 2008 were reviewed. Results: Retained lens fragments were removed with PPV and phacofragmantation in 24 eyes and with a vitreous cutter in 5 eyes. Before PPV, 9 eyes had intraocular lenses (IOLs) at the ciliary sulcus, 2 had IOLs subluxated into the vitreous, and 1 had a posterior chamber IOL located in the anterior chamber. Fourteen eyes had IOL implantation into the ciliary sulcus during the same session as PPV. Of the 6 eyes that were left aphakic during PPV, 2 had IOLs implantation to the ciliary sulcus and 4 had scleral fixated IOLs within the subsequent 2-month period. One eye had trabeculectomy 4 weeks after PPV and 1 eye had rhegmatogenous retinal detachment 7 weeks after PPV. At the 6-month follow-up, corrected visual acuity was better in eyes operated on within 3 days of cataract surgery compared to eyes operated more than 3 days after cataract surgery (0.64±0.27; 0.43±0.26; respectively, p=0.04). Conclusions: PPV is an effective and safe surgical treatment in eyes with retained lens fragments. The improvement in visual acuity is better in eyes operated on within 3 days of cataract surgery.Öğe Do daily wear opaquely tinted hydrogel soft contact lenses affect contrast sensitivity function at one meter?(2003) Özkağnıcı, A.; Zengin, N; Kamış, Ü.; Gündüz, K.Purpose. To investigate the effects of daily wear opaquely tinted hydrogel soft contact lenses on contrast sensitivity functions, as measured using the Pelli-Robson chart viewed at 1 meter. Methods. Contrast sensitivity was measured in 48 healthy individuals before and 6 hours after soft contact lens wear. Twenty-four subjects used clear soft contact lenses and 24 used tinted soft contact lenses. Results. The contrast sensitivity scores were significantly decreased monocularly and binocularly (P= 0.000 and P= 0.002, respectively) in the colored contact lens group whereas there were no significant changes in the clear contact lens group (P = 0.317 and P = 0.317, respectively). Conclusions. Color-tinted contact lenses were associated with a reduction of contrast sensitivity function. Therefore, those who wear colored contact lenses should be informed about the possible consequences of tinted contact lens wearing. © 2003 Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists, Inc.Öğe Effect of Altered Eating Habits and Periods During Ramadan Fasting on Intraocular Pressure, Tear Secretion, Corneal and Anterior Chamber Parameters(NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP, 2010) Kerimoglu, H.; Öztürk, B.; Gündüz, K.; Bozkurt, B.; Kamış, U.; Okka, M.Purpose To determine whether altered eating habits and periods, especially the pre-dawn meal, during Ramadan fasting have any significant effect on intraocular pressure (IOP), tear secretion, corneal and anterior chamber parameters. Methods IOP, basal tear secretion (BTS), reflex tear secretion (RTS), and Pentacam measurements of 31 healthy volunteers were performed at 0800 and 1600 hours during Ramadan fasting and 1 month later during non-fasting period. Results Comparison of measurements between fasting and non-fasting periods at 0800 hours revealed significantly higher values for IOP (P = 0.005), RTS (P = 0.006), and BTS (P = 0.014) during fasting. Conversely at 1600 hours, IOP = was significantly lower during fasting (P = 0.013) and no statistically significant difference was noted for RTS and BTS. IOP showed a diurnal variation of 2.45 mmHg (P < 0.001) and BTS showed a 3.06 mm decrease (P = 0.04) during the fasting period. No significant differences could be found in the corneal and anterior chamber parameters during fasting and non-fasting periods. Conclusions Our results revealed that fluid loading at the pre-dawn meal during Ramadan fasting might increase the IOP = and tear secretion in the early morning period and these values decrease remarkably at the end of 12 h of fasting due to dehydration.Öğe Meibomian Gland Dysfunction and Tear Film Abnormalities in Rosacea(LIPPINCOTT-RAVEN PUBL, 1995) Zengin, N.; Tol, H.; Gündüz, K.; Okudan, S.; Balevi, S.; Endoğru, HIn order to determine the relationship between meibomian gland dysfunction and tear film abnormalities in rosacea, tear film flow and stability and meibomian gland function were assessed in 43 consecutive patients. Schirmer, tear film break-up time, and meibomian gland function values in patients with ocular rosacea (n=28) were found to be significantly decreased as compared with those of the patients with only cutaneous involvement and control patients (p>0.05). In patients with dermatologic rosacea (n=15) these values were not different from those of the age- and sex-matched controls (p>0.05). The effects of tetracycline and meibomian gland expression therapy were also investigated in patients with ocular rosacea. Neither meibomian gland expression therapy nor tetracycline administration had beneficial effects on decreased tear secretion, but tetracycline improved the break-up time values. Our findings showed a positive relationship between tear film abnormalities and meibomian gland dysfunction in patients with rosacea. Decreased tear secretion in patients with ocular rosacea would seem to be a result of structural changes secondary to meibomian gland dysfunction, and short break-up time might be due to an abnormal meibum composition.Öğe Ocular and Periorbital Anthropometric Measurements in Term Turkish Newborns(SPRINGER FRANCE, 2001) Özkağnıcı, A.; Büyükmumcu, M.; Zengin, N.; Gündüz, K.; Koç, H.This study was conducted in an effort to determine the normal landmarks in the eyelids and eyebrows of newborns and the relationships between them. We also correlated all measurements with gender and head circumferences. The anthropometric measurements were performed on 86, normal term newborns (40 mates and 46 females) in the first 48 hours after delivery. There was no significant difference between either sex, or between the right and left eyes. In contrast, a statistically significant positive correlation was found between the head circumference and the horizontal fissure length (r = 0.42, p < 0.01). In addition, a significant correlation was found between the upper eyelid crease distance and the horizontal and the vertical fissure lengths (r = 0.27, p < 0.01; r = 0.22, p < 0.05, respectively). The results indicate that the normal eyelid crease location may be used as a landmark for guidance to plan surgical and reconstructive procedures.
