Color identification of some Turkish marbles
    (ELSEVIER SCI LTD, 2008) Gokay, M. K.; Gundogdu, I. B.
Colors of marbles can be found in wide variety in nature. Since, marbles are used as decorative covering stone, their appearance is very important. Value of marbles in construction markets are changing according to their colors and textural characteristics. This paper describes bow the colors of some Turkish marbles differentiate from each other. Color identification software, MCA, had been developed in this research for capturing different colors of marbles according to Red, Green, Blue (RGB) and Hue, Saturation, Intensity (HIS), color codes. Computer files including these codes have been saved. in a color databank of national marbles. These values can also be used to classify the marbles homogeneity according to regional or origin bases. Digital color codes help the marble trader to identify colors of their marble products numerically which eliminate subjective decisions based on human eyes. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Exploring Underground Water Passageways to Analyze Ground Safety For a Village Next to a Coal Pit Slopes in Turkey
    (PORTUGUESE SOC OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY & HYGIENE, 2015) Gokay, M. K.; Dogan, K.
Electrical resistivity survey was performed to determine underground water passageways at an open pit coal mine in west Anatolia in Turkey. The mine has 7 benches with 10 meter bench height. Safety inspection for pit slopes which have dip directions towards Southwest is the main concern described here. Northeast site of the coal pit which has mainly marl, volcanic and clay layers. The main problem in this pit is the danger of slope failure after heavy rains. Electrical resistivity surveys therefore were performed at the Northeast border of the pit. Wenner alpha and Pole-pole methods were used to obtain earth resistivity data through multi-electrode surveying. After evaluating the field measurements, it was determined that there are more than 4 water passageways into the coal mine from Northeast direction.

Hazardous occupational health & safety issues in quarries
(PORTUGUESE SOC OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY & HYGIENE, 2016) Mohammad, Shahriairi; Gokay, M. K.
Mining is without doubt a hazardous activity. But to what degree of hazard it is, depends on different parameters including geographical area. To understand the level of occupational life risk in open-pit mine activities, the following two studies could give an overview about the safety situation in this field. Kecejevic et al. (2007) verified the time period around 1995-2005 and they reported that 120 miners were killed every year in the United States. Similar but most shocking statistics are given by Jianjun in 2007 and he wrote that according to official statistics, the fatal accidents from 1949 to 2007 have been approximately 250 000 in China. It should be noted that, although many efforts have been made to improve the occupational safety worldwide through using right technology and well trained operators, but still a lot of work is needed to be done to reach to an acceptable level of occupational risk and safety in this field. In this paper the major parameters influencing the occupational safety in a quarry in Sweden were studied.

INTERACTION MATRIX APPLICATION AT ERMENEK (KARAMAN) LIGNITE MINE
    (INT SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE SGEM, 2008) Gokay, M. K.; Erdogan, H.; Dogan, K.
This study includes the application of interaction matrix system given by Hudson in 1992 to underground coal mining conditions. Implication of interaction matrix was realized here at private company owned underground coal mine. After clear description of the interaction matrix and its properties, selected mine workers and engineers worked at the studied underground mine were asked to evaluate predefined 21 evaluation parameters. During the evaluation of the matrix, the parameters were evaluated to obtain critical and dominant factors to rise the mine's operation efficiency. The interaction matrix form obtained from each person in this work were analyzed accordingly and saved for further inspections. These matrixes demonstrated which parameter was important and which one was dominant according to the person who evaluated the matrix.

Investigation the glazability of dimension andesites with glaze coating materials containing boron minerals in construction sector
    (SPRINGER, 2013) Sariisik, G.; Sariisik, A.; Gokay, M. K.
This study examined the usability of thin plates cut from rocks of volcanic origin as new decorative indoor and outdoor coating material when used instead of ceramic saddle. The study examined the basic material characterization of andesites and the glazability of andesites with glaze coating materials containing boron minerals. The series of characterization tests were conducted on andesite samples. Then, the samples were applied glaze for trial purposes. Analysis indicated that the andesite samples consisted of sanidine, mica and pyroxene minerals and its apparent porosity, density, water absorption, salt crystallization resistance, compressive strength, frost after compressive strength, bending strength and impact resistance values were 15.75 %, 2,640 kg/m(3), 7.41 %, 1.06 %, 47.03 MPa, 45.25 MPa, 10.16 MPa and 9.87 kPa respectively. In heat microscope measurements, maximum sintering was recorded at 1,182 A degrees C. Linear expansion coefficient (alpha) of the andesite at 400 A degrees C was 4.69 x 10(-6) K-1. Firing performed by using the prepared glaze recipe at approximately 1,055 and 1,000 A degrees C produced good results in terms of body-glaze harmony.

Time to re-evaluate responsibility of mine engineers in Turkey to obtain safer workplace environment
(PORTUGUESE SOC OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY & HYGIENE, 2016) Gokay, M. K.; Shahriairi, Mohammad
Mining operation in Turkey has been performed since early human history. Civilizations governing this fertile land in old times had several mines and especially metallic mines' products were shipped to Egypt through Mediterranean ports. In those very old days there were surely very limited workplace safety rules. However in modern times, mining operations in Turkey have been regulated to be safer, so all the rules and related legislations have been implemented accordingly to obtain safer working environment in open and underground mines. Besides current mining law and regulatory rules, two big mine disasters were happened in Turkey in 2014. Total lost of life were 319 in these two disasters (Guguen, 2015, Akgul, 2015). There are official reports describing these accidents together with their explanations. In this paper however accident risk in mines and mine engineers' positions in mines were covered by coherent brief analyses. Responsibilities of mine engineers described in the mining law in Turkey. Due to engineering implication in mine operations some uncertainty cases appeared and they were discussed on the bases of authors experiences here.

What can be the actions following a coal mine accident
    (PORTUGUESE SOC OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY & HYGIENE, 2016) Calkaya, M.; Gokay, M. K.
Coal has been produced in Turkey by state owned and private companies. There are more than 50 coal mining companies and their main products are lignite. Limited amount of bituminous coal are produced at north part of Turkey and supplied usually to smelters. Lignite coals' calorific value directing their type of usage, low calorie lignite coals are mainly mined only for power plants while the others are mined for domestic usage. Due to coal formation and depositional conditions in early geologic eras, coal reserves have not been found in large dimensions in Turkey. Besides lignite seams have been explored in separate locations with limited reserve in Turkey, they are mined by different companies and their coal products are usually consumed in their local regions. Main obstacle in Turkey's coal mining industry is mine explosions and other mine related accidents. In last 50 years, Turkey has dramatically experienced mine explosions and their post-event traumatic influences (Spada & Burgherr, 2016). This fact can easily be observed all over the society. In this paper what can be the situation and what can be the better way of handling the rescue operations are explained according to authors' experiences.
