Öğe Determining the Elastic Properties of Modified Polystyrenes by Sound Velocity Measurements(WILEY, 2011) Oral, Imran; Guzel, Hatice; Ahmetli, Gulnare; Gur, C. HakanThe effect of the binding of various polyfunctional groups to polystyrene's (PS's) aromatic ring on the elastic properties of the PS were investigated by an ultrasonic method. Various sets of samples were prepared by chemical modification of pure PSs having different molecular weights with SA, maleic anhydride, and phthalic anhydride. The ultrasonic wave velocities of modified PSs were measured with the pulse-echo method at room temperature by a computer-controlled analyzer and a digital oscilloscope. The values of the acoustic impedance, Poisson's ratio, and elasticity constants of the samples were calculated by the measured values of the densities and sound velocities. The longitudinal and shear wave velocities and the values of all elastic constants increased with chemical modification of the pure PS. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 121: 3425-3432, 2011Öğe Determining the mechanical properties of epoxy resin (DGEBA) composites by ultrasonic velocity measurement(WILEY, 2013) Oral, Imran; Guzel, Hatice; Ahmetli, GulnareIn this study, the composites of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy resin that have been formed by mixing epoxy resin with allyl glycidyl ether (AGE) and 2,3-epoxypropyl methacrylate [glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)] were prepared in weight % ratios of 90 : 10, 80 : 20, and 70 : 30. A computer controlled analyzer with 35 MHz and a digital oscilloscope with 60 MHz were used for measuring the velocities of ultrasonic wave. The measurement of ultrasonic velocity carried out by pulse echo method at frequencies of 2.25 and 3.5 MHz at room temperature. The values of acoustic impedance (Z), Poisson ratio (mu), and coefficients of elasticity (L, G, K, E) of composites were calculated by values of densities and velocities that obtained. Thus, the effect of modificating epoxy resin (DGEBA) by AGE and GMA on mechanical properties of DGEBA was investigated using the ultrasonic method. Atomic force microscopy has been used for determining the microstructure of composites. By the results obtained from the investigation, it have been established that the longitudinal and shear ultrasonic wave velocities, and the values of all the elasticity constants of DGEBA were increased by modification with AGE and GMA. Also the most suitable combination ratio for the compound of DGEBA : AGE and DGEBA : GMA has been found as 80 : 20. (c) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 127: 1667-1675, 2013Öğe The effect of students' affective characteristics on their success in physics lessons(SILA SCIENCE, 2012) Guzel, Hatice; Islim, UzeyirSince this research is the description of a problem, survey method and relational survey method as the research model were applied. In this research, a relationship between affective properties of students and their success in physics lessons was investigated in order to point out the importance of affective domain properties in learning. For this aim, confident and tested liked scale was applied to 353 physics teacher candidates from Selcuk University in Turkey. As a result of the regression analysis, it has been found how important the affective characteristics were in teaching. A strong relationship has been found between interest, motivation and success in physics classes. On the other hand, the existence of an opposite relation between the anxiety against physics and success has been found. A significant relationship was not found between success in physics lesson and self-sufficiency perception. The variance of affective characteristics related with physics lesson in the success of physics lesson was determined as 19.8%. It was determined that academic success is related with many factors. It can be considered that affective factors such as self-sufficiency, motivation and anxiety may affect the desire and interest of students towards lessons and many factors. There is directly proportional relationship between personal interest (PI) and success in physics lesson. Such a result is an expected situation.Öğe FACTORS AFFECTING THE COMPUTER USAGE OF PHYSICS TEACHERS WORKING AT PRIVATE TRAINING CENTERS(TURKISH ONLINE JOURNAL EDUCATIONAL TECH-TOJET, 2011) Guzel, HaticeThe rapid development of computer and instructional technologies eases our lives in many ways. Private teaching institutions have become one of the most important entities in the educational system of Turkey. The topics spelling at private teaching institutions will determine the university as well as the departments that the students are going to be enrolled as well as the quality of the education and instruction they will receive at those institutions. Physics classes, due to the extensive amount of abstracts concepts, are at the top of the classes causing students difficulties. Therefore, computer supported instruction will facilitate the comprehension of the students which would otherwise be difficult to understand. The present study is conducted with 40 physics teachers, 24 males and 16 females, working at the 20 branches of a private course in Ankara throughout the spring semester of the 2009-2010 academic year. The statistical analyses conducted showed that the majority of physics teachers believed that the use of computers facilitates learning.Öğe Investigation of Demographic Properties and Motivation Factors of Physics Teachers(EDAM, 2011) Guzel, HaticeScientific and technological developments resulted in an increase in the requirement of education in the society. In addition to this, the expectations from teachers differed and the need for more qualified teachers also increased. One of the factors affecting the quality of teachers is their motivation. In this research, it was aimed to reveal both demographic and professional profiles of secondary school physics teachers together with factors motivating themselves. General survey model was used in the research. Motivation factors priority order questionnaire was used as a data collecting tool. There were also questions in the questionnaire which determined the demographic and professional profiles of teachers. Motivation factors priority order questionnaire constituted of 6 different motivation factors. The research was performed on 103 physics teachers who were working at public and private high schools in Konya city center and in some districts. The statistical analysis of the research was carried out with SPSS 15 software by using percentage, frequency, Kruskal-Wallis H test, and Mann Whitney U test. 80.6 % of physics teachers in the sample were male and the rest was female. The results of the analysis indicated that the most motivating factor for physics teachers was factors related with advantages and the least motivating factor was related with the profession. The interesting and challenging thing here is that the factors "related with profession" were at the sixth and so the final stage. Since factors such as making different lectures, following new source materials, information exchange with colleagues, presence of education technology and growing good students were at the final stage for motivation of teachers, this presents serious challenges in terms of future of teaching profession and growing of rising generation.Öğe Measuring the Young's modulus of polystyrene-based composites by tensile test and pulse-echo method(SPRINGER, 2011) Oral, Imran; Guzel, Hatice; Ahmetli, GulnareIn this study, the pure polystyrenes (PS) with different molecular weights (3.5 x 10(5) and 5.0 x 10(5)) have been modified by the chemical modification with succinic anhydride (SA), maleic anhydride (MA), and phthalic anhydride (PhA). The modified polystyrenes (MPS) have been mixed with the pure PS with the molecular weight of 2.3 x 10(5) in weight % ratio 90:10, 80:20, and 70:30. Young's modulus of obtained composites has been measured mechanically by the tensile test and ultrasonic method at frequency of 5 MHz. Further, the values of Young's modulus measured by both methods have been compared with each other. From the results, a significant difference has not been found between the values of Young's modulus of both methods. As a result it can be stated that measuring the Young's modulus of these materials by the ultrasonic methods is more sensitive and economical than the mechanical methods.Öğe A study on school practice of students in field teaching master of arts without thesis(AMER INST PHYSICS, 2007) Guzel, HaticeTeacher training and the quality of the trained teachers include a large number of problems about the education system and practices that are constantly on agenda in Turkey. Teacher candidates should be well trained in order to possess certain qualifications.
