Öğe Analysing the metaphorical images of Turkish preschool teachers(2008) Kabadayi A.The metaphorical basis of teacher reflection about teaching and learning has been a rich area of theory and research. This is a study of metaphor as a shared system of interpretation and classification, which teachers and student teachers and their supervising teachers can cooperatively explore. This study employs metaphor as a means of research to provide insights into the prospective preschool pre-service and their cooperating teachers' current professional self-images, and their retrospective elementary schooling images. A questionnaire consisting of 12 metaphorical images generated by "preschool pre-service and their cooperating teachers" was administered to all entry level preschool pre-bachelor, bachelor student teachers who were enrolled in the Faculty of Education in Selcuk University, Turkey, during the 2005-2006 academic years. Their cooperating teachers (n = 317), currently working in Konya, were chosen to obtain information about their current and elementary schooling years' metaphorical images. Results of the study indicate that significant differences exist between pre-service (pre-bachelor and bachelor) and cooperating preschool teachers' current and elementary schooling metaphorical images. There was a marked difference in their use of student-centered and teacher-centered metaphors. Implications for pre-service and cooperating teacher education and further research are discussed.Öğe Analysis of the socio-demographic structure and thoughts of the turkish bilingual children on ‘bilingualism’ in germany(2008) Kabadayi A.Two thirds of the world's population is bilingual to some extent, hence from an international perspective speaking more than one language is the norm rather than the exception. Germany, Bulgaria, Iraq are only a few of the countries where more than one language is widely spoken. This study aims to analyse the socio-demographic structure and second language acquisition (L2) of a sample of Turkish bilingual children living in Germany through a survey with regard to the socio-demographic structure of the Turkish bilingual children, the socio-demographic structure of the Turkish bilingual children's parents, the Turkish bilingual children's opinions about second language acquisition and the Turkish bilingual children's opinions and thoughts about the society they live in and the schools they attended. The sample comprises 120 Turkish bilingual children attending pre-school and elementary schools in Germany. As a result of the findings, some implications and suggestions are made to the parents and the teachers that they should take necessary precautions to make Turkish bilingual children to integrate to the German society and be successful in the society they live. © 2008, Copyright Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.Öğe Analyzing preschoolers' overgeneralizations of object labeling in the process of mother-tongue acquisition in Turkey(2006) Kabadayi A.Language, as is known, is acquired under certain conditions: rapid and sequential brain maturation and cognitive development, the need to exchange information and to control others' actions, and an exposure to appropriate speech input. This research aims at analyzing preschoolers' overgeneralizations of the object labeling process in different categories in terms of age and gender. In this research, preschoolers' responses in overgeneralizations of the object labeling process of 'clothes', 'sports' and 'ground vehicles' was found non-significant in respect of their gender, while preschoolers' responses in overgeneralizations of the object labeling process of 'clothes', 'sports' and 'ground vehicles' was found significant in respect of their age. © 2006 Taylor & Francis.Öğe Investigating demographic characteristics and teaching perceptions of Turkish preschool teachers(2010) Kabadayi A.It is clear that teacher qualifications significantly affect the quality of teaching beliefs and education provided to young children and that higher qualifications in preschool teachers have both short- and long-term positive effects on their students. This study was built on pre-existing literature and new data to analyse the current socio-demographic characteristics and perceptions of teaching candidates entering the field of Preschool Education in Turkey. A questionnaire consisting of fixed-response and Likert-style questions was administered to all entry-level pre-bachelor and bachelor preschool student teachers enrolled in the Vocational School of Social Sciences (n = 120) and Faculty of Education of Selcuk University (n = 107) during the 2004-2005 academic year as well as cooperating teachers (n = 90) currently working in Konya. The aim was to obtain information regarding their background characteristics and perceptions of preschool teaching as a profession. Results indicate that significant differences exist between pre-service (pre-bachelor and bachelor) and cooperating preschool teachers' perceptions of the teaching profession. Implications for pre-service and cooperating teacher education and further research are discussed. © 2010 Taylor & Francis.
