    The behaviour of Anatolian wild sheep Ovis orientalis anatolica Valenciennes 1856 living on Bozdag in Konya

    This subspecies prefers some certain region of Bozdag Mountain which have steppe vegetation and lives under protection in the area of 42 000 acres. Gramineae, Leguminosae and Umbelliferae families, constitute most of the foods. Wild sheep generally form flocks of 12-15. Ewes and rams live together in winter. In summer, sexually mature males constitute different flocks, but females live together with lambs and sexually immature males. The rutting period of Anatolian wild sheep is in December. The pregnancy period continues 145-150 days after copulation. Parturition is in May. Physically weak young ewes generally give birth to one lamb but matured ewes to twin lambs. Only ewes care for the young. The enemies of wild sheep are mostly wolf, fox, eagle and sheepdog on Bozdag. Males can defend themselves from enemies with their horns but defensive strength of ewes and lambs is rather weak. -from English summary
