Öğe Aerodynamic performance of a horizontal axis wind turbine with forward and backward swept blades(ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 2018) Kaya, Mehmet Numan; Kose, Faruk; Ingham, Derek; Ma, Lin; Pourkashanian, MohamedBlades are the most important components of wind turbines in order to convert wind energy to mechanical energy. This study investigates the aerodynamic performance of Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines (HAWTs) with forward and backward swept blades. The effect of the blade sweep direction, the location of the sweep start up and the tip offset on the aerodynamic performance are investigated using a model HAWT with a 0.9 m rotor as the baseline configuration. Changes in power and thrust coefficients with swept blades are investigated for the design tip speed ratio of the baseline wind turbine at a wind speed of 10 m/s. The wind turbine with the forward swept blade that has sweep start up at r(ss)/R = 0.15 and tip offset of d/D = 0.2 has been found to give a remarkable boost to the power output with an increase of about 2.9% over the baseline turbine. The backward swept blade with r(ss)/R = 0.75 and d/D = 0.2 has shown the highest reduction in thrust coefficient, namely 5.4%, at the design tip speed ratio. In conclusion, it is found that the forward swept blades have the ability of increasing the performance while the backward swept blades tend to decrease the thrust coefficient.Öğe Analysis on meeting the electric energy demand of an active plant with a wind-hydro hybrid power station in Konya, Turkey: Konya water treatment plant(PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD, 2013) Kose, Faruk; Kaya, Mehmet NumanHydroelectric plants play an important role in electricity production in Turkey as well as all over the world. However, the increase in the irregularity of flow regimes and the decrease in water ranges of the rivers due to global warming in recent years have revealed that supporter systems are necessary. One alternative solution that could be applied is an integrated system with both hydropower and wind energy. In this study, a system consisting of a hydroelectric power plant (HEPP) and/or wind power plant(s) (WPP) is designed to resolve the energy demand for the Konya water treatment plant, and the results were analyzed. The wind power calculator program and local wind energy measurement data were used to design the WPP. In addition, the water flow rate due to the mean of the elevation difference between the bend of the dam and plant was used to design the HEPP. The electrical energy consumption of the Konya water treatment plant was considered in the design of the WPP and HEPP. The energy production of the WPP and HEPP, the energy demand of the water treatment plant, the monthly and yearly affordability of the energy production were calculated. Additionally, an economic analysis was performed, where the basic payback period was calculated. All the data used in this study are based on longterm measurements. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Million tones of biomaterials such as wood are used in woody industries and significant amount of wood waste is obtained. It is possible to make use of wood waste as fuel by pelletizing them. In this study, samples of pine wood sawdust (PWS) and medium density fiber (MDF) sawdust pellets have been obtained. After carrying out chemical analyses on these samples; the ratio of volatile matter, upper calorific value, lower calorific value, ash, total humidity rate and sulfur rates have been identified. The emission values of the exhaust gases (CO, CO2, SO2, NO, NOx) forming as a result of the combustion process of pellet samples in laboratory conditions have been measured. The effects of addition of zeolite, cane molasses (CM), starch in pellet samples on the emission values have been studied. In addition, in order to identify the combustion velocities of the pellet samples, a fixed-bed experimental singeing machine has been devised. As a conclusion, PWS pellet has been found to be a cleaner and more efficient alternative to coal of lignite type. The calorific value of MDF dust pellet samples has reached a value of 3.857 cal/gr as a result of the fire retardant materials in it. The lowest emission values have been observed in PWS pellets which contains 9% zeolite as a binding material. It has been found out that PWS burning with zeolite reduces the combustion velocity and thus increasing the efficiency and also reducing the stack gas emission.Öğe Rüzgâr enerjisi-pompaj depolamalı hidrolik hibrit güç sisteminin tasarımı ve optimizasyonu(Selçuk Üniversitesi Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2012-12-24) Kaya, Mehmet Numan; Köse, FarukGünümüzde, fosil yakıtlarının günden günde tükenmesi ve hava kirliliğine sebep olan gaz emisyon artışlarının neden olduğu iklim sorunlarının artması nedeni ile yenilenebilir enerji kaynakları ön plana çıkmıştır. Buna göre, hibrit sistem ile önemli ölçüde yıllık getiri sağlanabileceği sonucuna varılmıştır.Öğe Wind Power Plants for Low Rated Wind Speed Regions: Feasibility Analysis and Simulation of a System(E D P SCIENCES, 2016) Kaya, Mehmet Numan; Kose, FarukThe use of wind power has become an important and growing part of the electrical energy supply in many countries all over the world. Wind turbines are the main components of wind power stations and every single development on these turbines affects the market. Latest developments in wind turbine technologies caused to decrease in costs, thus, besides high-wind-speed regions, low-wind-speed regions are taken into account as a feasible option to generate electricity. The present work investigates the feasibility of a wind power station located in a low rated wind speed region of Turkey providing a general approach for selection of the suitable wind turbine. Economic analysis was performed by calculating the key financial figures such as net present value (NPV), basic payback period (BPP) and the internal rate of return (IRR) for five various options and hourly mean, monthly and seasonal power productions are simulated for the most feasible option using the wind speed measurements in the region. Results show that it is possible to obtain a reasonable capacity factor in low rated wind speed regions with wind turbines that have larger rotors. Although the average wind speed is low in the examined region, a wind power station is still found to be feasible. According to the simulation results, maximum power is produced during the evening hours on a daily basis and during the summer months on a seasonal basis, ensuring power flow usually when maximum power consumption levels are reached. All the data used in this study are based on long-term measurements.Öğe Wind-Hydro Pumped Storage Power Stations to Meet the Energy Demands of Irrigation: Feasibility, Optimal Design and Simulation of a System(CHINESE SOC MECHANICAL ENGINEERS, 2018) Kose, Faruk; Kaya, Mehmet NumanThe present study focuses on design and use of a grid connected optimal hybrid wind-hydro power station to supply energy for irrigation. To select the optimal system components, an optimization program that selects the cost-optimal wind-hydro pumped storage system components is developed and the energy flow in the system is simulated for the optimal system. Economic analysis was performed for the optimal option by calculating the key financial figures such as basic payback period (BPP), net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return (IRR). The optimal system is found to be feasible having a basic payback period of approximately eight years. Although the hybrid system has an energy storage component, still grid connection was necessary to ensure cheaper energy flow in some time periods. According the simulation results, all the components of the hybrid system are actively used and a great part of the electricity is supplied from the wind pumped hydro hybrid system. One more observation of this work is that the pumped hydro storage systems are very suitable to be used together with wind energy.
