Öğe A Case of Osteopetrosis with Pelvic Ectopic Spleen: An Unusual Association(TURKISH J PEDIATRICS, 2001) Reisli, İsmail; Çalışkan, U.; Taştekin, G.; Koç, H.; Açıkgözoğlu, Saim; Aydoğdu Kıreşi, D.; Aydın, K.A three-month-old girl was admitted to the hospital with a history of pallor. On physical examination, the liver was enlarged and a solid mass was palpated in the left abdomen. Laboratory evaluation revealed anemia and thrombocytopenia. Bone marrow was hypocellular with reduced number of megakaryocytes. Radiographic findings and scintigraphic study of the long bones were consistant with osteopetrosis. In the imaging studies, including ultrasonography, computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and scintigraphic study, an ectopic spleen expanded into the bony pelvis was observed. We report here unique case of infantile osteopetrosis associated with pelvic ectopic spleen.Öğe Corticosteroid Treatment for Prevention of Prematurity Complications(2002) Çelik, Çetin; Acar, A.; Çiçek, N.; Koç, H.; Ak, D.; Akyürek, CemalettinObjective: To investigate of efficiency to corticosteroid treatment for prevention of respiratory distress syndrome and other prematurity complications. Materials and Methods: One thousand and six babies born at 26-36th gestational age were investigated for following parameters; the development of respiratory distress syndrome, necessity of surfactant therapy, mean duration of daily ventillatory support, rates of Grade III or IV intraventricular hemorrhage, and periventricular leukomalacia, necrotizing enterocolitis, proven neonatal sepsis and neonatal death. Antenatal steroids were administered in the form of two 12-mg intramuscular doses of betamethasone 12 h apart as a total 24 mg in the 24 h and repeat courses of two 12 mg of betamethasone every 7 days after the first dose of the last course if undelivered. Babies were divided into 4 groups based on betamethasone treatment: The first group or control group didn't received treatment; the second group received treatment and delivered within 12 h after first injection; the third group delivered 12-24 h after first injection; and fourth group delivered at least 24 h after first injection. The patients ongoing pregnancy at least 1 week were divided into two groups as a single dose and multiple courses in once a week. Results: Significant difference for development of respiratory distress syndrome between fourth group and others was found (p=0.029). There were significant difference for respiratory distress syndrome rate in hypertansive and premature rupture of membranes groups between fourth group and control group (p=0.002, p=0.041). There weren't significant difference for RDS between repeat doses and single dose groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: Single dose corticosteroid is an effective treatment for the development of RDS and the prevention of other prematurity complications.Öğe Ocular and Periorbital Anthropometric Measurements in Term Turkish Newborns(SPRINGER FRANCE, 2001) Özkağnıcı, A.; Büyükmumcu, M.; Zengin, N.; Gündüz, K.; Koç, H.This study was conducted in an effort to determine the normal landmarks in the eyelids and eyebrows of newborns and the relationships between them. We also correlated all measurements with gender and head circumferences. The anthropometric measurements were performed on 86, normal term newborns (40 mates and 46 females) in the first 48 hours after delivery. There was no significant difference between either sex, or between the right and left eyes. In contrast, a statistically significant positive correlation was found between the head circumference and the horizontal fissure length (r = 0.42, p < 0.01). In addition, a significant correlation was found between the upper eyelid crease distance and the horizontal and the vertical fissure lengths (r = 0.27, p < 0.01; r = 0.22, p < 0.05, respectively). The results indicate that the normal eyelid crease location may be used as a landmark for guidance to plan surgical and reconstructive procedures.
