Edirne Şehabeddin Paşa Camii haziresi mezar taşları / The tombstones located at the graveyard of Edirne Şehabettin Paşa Mosque

In this study, 22 tombstones located at the graveyard of Edirne Sehabeddin Pasha mosque pertaining to the Ottoman Period were documented and scrutinized in terms of art history. The entire samples listed in the catalogue were photographed and their documentation were realized. The tombstones were evaluated one by one as to their characteristics in Turkish tombstone art. Of the 18 tombstones, 18 were ordinary ground stones, 3 were framed stones and 1 was sarcophagus. The oldest of these tombstones was dated 1648 A.D. whereas the latest was dated 1889 A.D. The stones were engraved with motives such as cypress, vitis, tulip, rose, flowers, curling branches and motifs. In addition to their aesthetic view, the Ottoman tombstones provide important information regarding professions, titles, and beliefs. The tombstones investigated in this study stand out to be simple exemplars that maintain the tradition of tombstone building in social, economic and cultural aspects.
