Öğe Assessment of effects of pre- and post-training programme for healthcare professionals about breastfeeding(I C D D R B-CENTRE HEALTH POPULATION RESEARCH, 2007) Kutlu, Ruhusen; Kara, Fatih; Durduran, Yasemin; Marakoglu, Kamile; Civi, SelmaThis retrospective study assessed the effects of pre- and post-training programme for healthcare professionals about breastfeeding. The study included 3,114 mothers who had children aged 1-72 month(s). Their knowledge and behaviours relating to breastfeeding were evaluated. The mothers were randomly divided into two groups: the 'before' group included 2,000 women who were not informed about breastfeeding, and the 'after' group comprised 1,114 women who had been informed about breastfeeding. 56.2% and 66.1% of the mothers started breastfeeding within 30 minutes after delivery, respectively, in the before and the after group (chi(2)=29.31, p<0.001). 16.7% and 36.5% gave exclusive breastfeeding for six months (chi(2) =72.85, p<0.001), and 28.5% and 23.7% stopped breastfeeding within the first five months (chi(2)=17.20, p=0.002). Ninety-four percent delivered in a hospital or in a primary healthcare centre. Therefore, prenatal and postnatal breastfeeding education and support courses may improve a woman's chance of starting and continuing to breastfeed her baby. In terms of the number of antenatal check-ups, since the differences between the two groups were significant (chi(2)=390.67, p=0.000), the importance of the training programme about breastfeeding was highlighted. Follow-up interventions after training are suggested.Öğe The Assessment of Quality of Life and Depression Among Police Officers(ORTADOGU AD PRES & PUBL CO, 2009) Kutlu, Ruhusen; Civi, Selma; Karaoglu, OnurObjective: We aimed to investigate the quality of life and depression among police officers who are quite vulnerable to psychological effects due to the nature of the job they perform. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out between May 25112006 and June 15(th) 2006 among 492 police officers working at the Police Organization of Konya. Depression level was examined through the Beck depression Inventory (BDI). In addition, QoL was assessed using the WHO QoL-BREF questionnaire. Results: Of all the participants, 467 (94.9%) were male, and 25 (5.1%) female. Mean age was 37.39 +/- 6.50 (min = 22, max = 53). When the cut-off point of BDI was considered 17.403 (81.9%) police officers had BDI <= 16, and 89 (18.1%) had BDI >= 17 (depressive). The frequency of depression level was significantly higher among the police officers who were in debts, not home owners and could not afford to pay their credit card balances on time (p < 0.05). Thus, there seemed to be a positive correlation between stress and economical problems. Besides, QoL scores were significantly lower among the depressive individuals than non-depressive ones (p < 0.001). Conclusion: As the study clearly indicates, QoL scores were significantly lower among depressive individuals. These results indicate that police officers are subject to high levels of psychological risk. There is an obvious need to provide psychological support and consulting services to the police.Öğe Auditory P300 event-related potential in tobacco smokers(ELSEVIER SCI LTD, 2009) Guney, Figen; Genc, Bulent Oguz; Kutlu, Ruhusen; Ilhan, Bilge CetinThe aim of this study was to elucidate the chronic effects of tobacco smoking on the P300, a neurophysiological index of cognitive function. Prospective study participants were recruited from a family medicine polyclinic. We selected 32 right-handed smokers who had smoked more than 15 cigarettes per day, by inhalation, for more than 2 years. The control population consisted of 32 right-handed, age-matched healthy individuals who had never smoked. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded with the auditory "oddball" two-tone discrimination task. The data from the central (Cz) and frontal (Fz) electrodes were analyzed. The P300 and NI amplitudes at Fz were lower in the study population compared to the control group. The early component of ERP, the measure of mental speed (N1) latency at Fz was prolonged in the study group compared to the controls, possibly because early cognitive processes such as sensory input or initial encoding of sensory information were delayed in this group. For those who smoke, a decreased NI amplitude might indicate delayed information processing and possibly short-term memory disturbance. Thus, chronic tobacco smoking may produce prefrontal cognitive dysfunction. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The goiter prevalence and urinary iodine levels among adolescents. Turk J Pediatr 2011; 53: 161-168. Endemic goiter and iodine deficiency are among the worldwide major public health problems of today. We aimed to research the goiter prevalence and the urinary iodine level of school children. In this descriptive study, 1,847 school children in Konya aged between 10 and 18 years were included. Urinary iodine level was measured. The mean value of iodine excretion in urine was 198 +/- 46.61 mu g/L. In 40 students (2.2%), the urinary iodine level was <100 mu g/L. Six of these students (0.3%) had moderate iodine deficiency. Thyroid hyperplasia was found with palpation method in 128 students (6.9%). Ultrasonographically, five female students had solid nodule, and one male student had multiple nodules. In our study, no severe iodine deficiency was found. According to the results of our study, the mandatory iodization program in Konya has been conducted successfully.Öğe A new approach to chromosomal abnormalities in sperm from patients with oligoasthenoteratozoospermia: detection of double aneuploidy in addition to single aneuploidy and diploidy by five-color fluorescence in situ hybridization using one probe set(ELSEVIER SCIENCE INC, 2008) Durakbasi-Dursun, Hatice Gul; Zamani, Ayse Gul; Kutlu, Ruhusen; Gorkemli, Huseyin; Bahce, Muhterem; Acar, AynurObjective: To determine the frequencies of disomy, nullisomy, total aneuploidy, and diploidy in the sperms of infertile men. Design: A controlled prospective study. Setting: Assisted reproductive technology (ART)/IVF Unit and Department of Medical Biology and Genetics, Meram Medical Faculty, Konya, Turkey. Patient(s): Infertile men with oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (OAT) and normal fertile donors. Intervention(s): After slide preparation from semen samples, sperm nuclei were analyzed for chromosomes 13, 18, 21, X, and Y by five-color fluorescence in situ hybridization. Main Outcome Measure(3): The sperm aneuploidy (disomy and nullisomy) and diploidy rates were determined according to the number of signals detected for each probe in infertile and fertile men. Results: Patients with OAT had a significantly higher incidence of disomy (except chromosome 18 and XX disomy), nullisomy (except chromosome 18), and diploidy than normal fertile controls. In addition to double disomy, double nullisomy and disomy+nullisomy were observed in patients with OAT, but none of these were seen in controls. Conclusion(s): In this study patients with OAT had an increased rate of sperm aneuploidy and diploidy. This finding suggest that patients with OAT may be at an increased risk of producing aneuploid and triploid offsprings. For this reason, it may be very, important to perform the sperm fluorescence in situ hybridization in patients with OAT. Thus, a more informative genetic counseling might be given to couples with male factor infertility who are at an increased risk of having Aneuploid offsprings and triploid conceptions before intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).
