Öğe Assessing the scenic quality of geomorphological formations in karapinar's rural areas(2013) Polat A.T.With increasing land use conflicts around the world, as well as need for more agricultural land, "natural" areas are coming under increased threat of disturbance or destruction. If these lands are to be preserved or protected, some measure of their value is required and in the world of market-based instruments this "value" is often converted to a monetary currency. One area that often gets overlooked is the aesthetics of natural land, which is often the primary emotional driver of natural land protection. However it remains a hard value to quantify and this paper attempts to fill this gap, especially for geomorphological features. A visual quality assessment method was used and calculated by means of scenic quality and eight descriptors. With photos taken in the study area, a photo-questionnaire was prepared and rated by the participants. According to the findings, the visual quality of geomorphological formations is of generally high value; in particular, scenes of the volcanic lakes and ponor plateau are very valuable in terms of visual quality. Strong positive relationships were also found between the scenic quality and some descriptors (coherence, complexity, wilderness, vividness, mystery, being interesting, legibility and uniqueness). In addition, coherence, uniqueness and vividness played roles in the shaping of the scenic quality. © IDOSI Publications, 2013.Öğe Kyoto Japanese Garden in Konya, Turkey: The design principles of Japanese Gardens [Japanski perivoj Kyoto u turskom gradu Konyi: Oblikovni principi japanskog perivoja](2010) Polat A.T.; Güngör S.; Kaklik N.The natural, exotic and mystic properties of Japanese gardens differentiate them from other gardens in the world. Since Japanese gardens are created in many countries, many garden designers and garden users are curious about the main principles that influence the creation of these gardens. The objective of this research was to evaluate the adequacy of the Japanese garden in Konya in Turkey through application of the principles of the Japanese garden design. According to the research, the created garden in Turkey may represent a good example of Japanese gardens. The results obtained by this study may be taken as guiding principles for the creation of thematic Japanese gardens in the world.
