    Effect of different surface treatments on the microtensile bond strength of two self-adhesive flowable composites

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different surface treatments on the microtensile bond strength (mu TBS) of two different self-adhesive flowable composite materials (SACs) to dentin. Forty extracted human molars were horizontally flattened to expose the dentin surfaces. The teeth were divided into eight groups according to the surface treatments (acid etching, Er:YAG laser quantum square pulse (QSP) mode, and Er:YAG laser medium-short pulse (MSP) mode at 10 Hz, 1.2 W, 120 mJ, and control-SiC) and SAC type (Vertise Flow and Fusio Liquid Dentin) (n = 5). Light cured 4-mm-high composite build-ups were made on the dentin surfaces, and the specimens were sectioned into serial sticks (n = 15). Later, the specimens were attached to microtensile testing machine and tensile force was applied at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min until failure occurred. The failure modes were evaluated using a stereomicroscope at x40 magnification, and one sample from each group was used for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) evaluation. The data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test (alpha = 0.05). In all surface treatment groups along with the control groups, Vertise Flow showed better mu TBS than the Fusio Liquid Dentin with the exception of the Er:YAG MSP mode surface treatment (p < 0.05). Etching with phosphoric acid and the Er:YAG QSP mode surface treatment significantly increased the mu TBS of Vertise Flow (p < 0.05). Etching with phosphoric acid, Er:YAG QSP mode surface treatment, and Er:YAG MSP mode surface treatment significantly increased the mu TBS of Fusio Liquid Dentin (p < 0.05). The mu TBS of Vertise Flow was higher than the mu TBS of Fusio Liquid Dentin. The Er:YAG laser irradiation increased the mu TBS of both self-adhesive flowable resin composites in two pulse modes tested (MSP or QSP). However, the highest mu TBS was recorded when Vertise Flow was applied with acid etching.

    Evaluation of temperature changes in the pulp chamber during polymerization of light-cured pulp-capping materials by using a VALO LED light curing unit at different curing distances

    The aim of this study was to evaluate temperature changes in the pulp chamber during polymerization of four different pulp-capping materials using a LED-light-curing-unit in the contact and noncontact positions. A pulpal circulation mechanism was simulated to measure increases in temperature in four pulp-capping materials that were applied to the occlusal dentin surface. Two different distances were used between the tip of the unit and the material surface during polymerization; 0 and 2 mm. The data were statistically analyzed using factorial-ANOVA, one-way-ANOVA, and Tukey's HSD test. There were statistically differences between contact and noncontact groups (p<0.05). Contact groups produced significantly lower temperature rise compared with noncontact groups. The highest and lowest mean temperature increases were calculated for the Biner LC and the TheraCal LC, respectively. Considering the effects of temperature rising, the distance of the light curing units from restorations should not be overlooked as well as the types of the materials.

    Fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth restored with ceramic inlays and different base materials

    This study evaluated the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth restored with different base materials and mesio-occlusal-distal (MOD) ceramic inlays. Fifty mandibular molars were assigned into five groups (n=10 per group). Group1 (control) comprised intact molar teeth without any treatment. Teeth in other groups were subjected to root canal treatment and restored with MOD ceramic inlays on different base materials. In Group 2, base material was zinc phosphate cement; Group 3's was glass ionomer cement; Group 4's was composite resin, and Group 5's was composite resin reinforced with fiber. Finally, a continuous occlusal load was applied until fracture occurred. Mean fracture resistance of Group 1 (3,027 N) was significantly higher than the other groups (890, 1,070, 1,670, 1,226 N respectively). Fracture resistance of Group 4 was statistically comparable with Group 5 and significantly higher than Groups 2 and 3 (p<0.05; Tukey's HSD). Use of different base materials under ceramic inlay restorations could affect the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth.

    Temperature rises during tooth bleaching with different light-curing units

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of three different light-curing units on the temperature rise induced in the pulpal cavity, when bleached with 35% hydrogen peroxide (HP). Forty extracted maxillary central incisors were randomly divided into four groups according to photoactivation procedure (n=10). Whiteness HP (WHP) bleaching agent which contains 35% HP bleach was placed on the facial tooth surface and no photoactivation device was used (control); an blue light-emitting diode (LED, 40s), a diode laser (4W, Continous mode, 20s), and Nd:YAG laser (4W, 60Hz frequency, 20s). Temperature rise in the pulpal chamber was measured with a J-type thermocouple wire that was connected to a data logger before and immediately after each 20-40s application. One tooth of each group was selected for scanning electron microscope analysis. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by the Games Howell post hoc test at a preset alpha of 0.05. One-way ANOVA revealed that there was a significant difference among the light-curing units (p<0.05) and between control group and light-curing units (p<0.05). The Nd:YAG induced significantly, which resulted in higher temperature increase than other light-curing units (10.7 degrees C). The LED unit produced the lowest temperature changes (3.2 degrees C) among the light-curing units. The presence of the bleaching gel did not cause a temperature increase in control group (0 degrees C). The results suggested that using light-curing units caused temperature changes in the intrapulpal cavity during tooth bleaching. The use of LED will be more safer for pulpal health when assisted with WHP bleaching gel.
