Öğe Cumhuriyet döneminde devlet tarafından kurulan ilk sanayi kuruluşu Kayseri Sümerbank Bez Fabrikası(SELCUK UNIV, INST TURKISH STUDIES, 2019) Semiz, Yaşar.; Toplu, Güngör.The Sumerbank Kayseri Fabric Factory was established within the scope of the First Five-Year Industrialization Plan (1934). The factory, which was decided to be constructed completely for the processing of domestically produced cotton, was designed with the reinforced concrete and load-bearing composite wall construction techniques in the Soviet Union and decided to be established with the loan of 8.5 Million Turkish Liras, which was borrowed from the same country. The foundation of the factory, which was the first important work of the Turkish-Soviet (Russian) friendship and decided to be established under the guidance of the experts from the USSR, was laid by Prime Minister Ismet Inonu on 20 May 1934. The factory was completed in 16.5 months and opened on 16 September 1935 with the participation of the Minister of Economy Celal Bayar and the guest technical delegation from the USSR (Russia). Sumerbank Kayseri Factory, which was established to produce popular type, cheap cotton fabric and yarn, had a total area of 922,500 m2 of which a part of 218.000 m2 was a closed area, which is composed of auxiliary buildings, warehouses and social facilities such as enterprise, Directory, Repair Shop and Power Plant. In the year of its opening, there were two thousand five hundred male, four hundred female workers and 155 civil servants working in the factory. The factory processed about 7600 tons of cotton and produced 23,628 spindles and 5,750 tons of yarn, 1,028 weaving looms and 18 thousand 364 meters of fabric. Sumerbank Kayseri Fabric Factory, which initiated the industrialization movement in Turkey and was the first facility built by the state, is a work of a great revolution as its period of establishment and the location. Its construction objective and economic and social function are directly related to the attempts of the Turkish Republic to nationalize and develop with government support. Hence, the facility is not only based in Kayseri, also gives an opportunity to make a overall assessment about the 'Modern Turkey' that was attempted to be created in that period.
