19 May 2011 Kutahya - Simav earthquake and evaluation of existing sample RC buildings according to the TEC-2007 criteria
    (COPERNICUS GESELLSCHAFT MBH, 2013) Arslan, M. H.; Olgun, M.; Koroglu, M. A.; Erkan, I. H.; Koken, A.; Tan, O.
This study examines the damage caused to reinforced concrete structures by the 2011 earthquake that occurred in Simav, Turkey. The study briefly reports on post-earthquake field observations, tectonic characteristics of the earthquake area, geotechnical characteristics of the field, and seismic characteristics of the earthquake. The main part of the study comprises a field study, material experiments, and performance analyses of two reinforced concrete buildings that survived the earthquake with medium level damage. The building performance was calculated and assessed according to the Turkish Earthquake Code requirements for existing building stock, and recommendations were made based on the findings.

Investigation of soil parameters affecting the stability of homogeneous slopes using the Taguchi method
    (MAIK NAUKA/INTERPERIODICA/SPRINGER, 2006) Tan, O.
Investigations on the effect of the bulk density, the cohesion, the internal angle of friction, the slope height, and the slope length on the stability of homogeneous slopes are reported here. The Taguchi method was used for the study, and a standard L16 orthogonal array with 5 parameters and 4 levels was chosen. The results of the study show that the most efficient parameters of the stability of homogeneous slopes are the slope height, the slope length, the cohesion, the internal angle of friction, and the bulk density. The critical safety factors obtained by the Taguchi method are found to be in good agreement with those determined by the ordinary method.

Optimization of compressive strength in admixture-reinforced cement-based grouts
(INST CIENCIAS CONSTRUCCION EDUARDO TORROJA, 2007) Tan, O.; Zaimoğlu, Ahmet Şahin
The Taguchi method was used in this study to optimize the unconfined (7-, 14- and 28-day) compressive strength of cement-based grouts with bentonite, fly ash and silica fume admixtures. The experiments were designed using an L-16 orthogonal array in which the three factors considered were bentonite (0%, 0.5%, 1.0% and 3%), fly ash (10%, 20%, 30% and 40%) and silica fume (0%, 5%, 10% and 20%) content. The experimental results, which were analyzed by ANOVA and the Taguchi method, showed that fly ash and silica fume content play a significant role in unconfined compressive strength. The optimum conditions were found to be: 0% bentonite, 10% fly ash, 20% silica fume and 28 days of curing time. The maximum unconfined compressive strength reached under the above optimum conditions was 17.1 MPa.
