As a result of a comprehensive literature research, quality criteria for urban parks are defined as accessibility, activities/variety, comfort and image and sociability. User-behaviour, needs and expectations were also taken into consideration, as these components will also play an important role in the quality of the place. The determined quality criteria were assessed at Alaaddin Hill, a big tumulus place in the city centre of Konya that serves as an urban park. A questionnaire survey was carried out on a heterogeneous group consisting of 350 people chosen at random. The quality of the Alaaddin Hill site was assessed through interpretation of field observations and questionnaire responses. It was concluded that the four criteria examined were very important to the assessment of a successful urban park and should inform the design principles of such projects.
