    Tobacco prevalence and affecting factors of Selçuk University personnel

    The present study is a cross-sectional quantitative study aimed to investigate the Prevalence of tobacco use behavior and its association with socio-demographic information of university personnel. The study intended to determine the frequency of tobacco behavior of 356 personnel in Selçuk University between 2020 and 2021. The study participants were academicians, administration staff, and laborers. A questionnaire that consists of 39 questions addressing the socio-demography, tobacco use behavior, and nicotine dependence level was the data collection tool. This study encompasses 70.5% academicians, 14.3% administration staff, and 15.2% laborers, mostly (73.6%) were 18-45 years old, with 61% males and 39% females. In this study, 57.6% tried tobacco at least for some time, 26.7% were former smokers and 30.9% were current smokers, with 35% males and 24.5% females. In addition, 26.7% of the academicians, 35.3% of administration staff, and 46.3% of the laborers were current smokers. Current smoking was statistically and significantly higher among males, the divorced, low level of education, low level of family income, laborers or cleaners, and people aged 36-45 at p<0.05. On the other hand, current smoking was lower among females, married, higher level of education, lower-middle level of family income, the academicians, medical professionals, and people aged 46 and above at p<0.05. In the present study, non-smoking tobacco use was null, and 89% of cases among the current smokers use filter cigarettes. Concerning nicotine dependence, 86.4% of smokers are low to moderate, and 13.6% are highly dependent. The overall quit attempt was 85.9%, while the attempt among the current smokers was 73.6%. The smoking quitting rate was 40.5%, with relatively higher among males than females; 41.6% vs. 37.9%. Considering that more than 70% of the study population were academicians, the role models of a community, finding 30.9% of active smokers is high.
