Öğe COMPARATIVE HISTOMETRICAL STUDY OF THE CEREBELLUM AND THE DETERMINATION OF SOME AgNOR PARAMETERS IN DIFFERENT AVIAN SPECIES(NATL VETERINARY RESEARCH INST, 2011) Sur, Emrah; Oznurlu, Yasemin; Ozaydin, Tugba; Colakoglu, Fatma; Unsal, Sadettin; Yener, YesimThe study was carried out to determine some characteristics of silver stained nucleolus organising regions (AgNOR parameters) of the Purkinje cells and structural differences of the cortex, if any, in the cerebellum of turkeys, ducks, pigeons, and starlings. The thickness of the molecular and granular layer at the summit of the folia was the highest in pigeons, whereas the highest value of the molecular and granular layer was determined at the deep of the folia in turkeys. The highest number of Purkinje cells per unit scale was observed in pigeons and starlings. The mean sizes of the Purkinje cells were greater in turkeys than in other species. The mean area of the Purkinje cell nucleus, AgNOR area and AgNOR counts were found to be higher in turkeys. However, there was no difference in the mean ratio of AgNOR area to Purkinje cell nucleous area among the species. In conclusion, it seems that the results obtained from this study could be of particular interest to comparative biologists and physiologists.Öğe The effects of acrylamide on the frequency of megakaryocytic emperipolesis and the mitotic activity of rat bone marrow cells(WILEY, 2011) Yener, Yesim; Dikmenli, MusaBACKGROUND: Although the pathophysiological importance of emperipolesis is not known exactly, it has been reported to increase significantly in cases of various cancer types, different tumours and thrombosis disorders. In this study the effects of acrylamide on the frequency of megakaryocytic emperipolesis and the mitotic activity in rat bone marrow cells were determined. For this purpose, two separate experiments were performed with Sprague-Dawley rats gavaged with 0, 30, 45 and 60 mg acrylamide kg(-1) body weight (BW) for five consecutive days. In the second experiment, 3 mg colchicine kg(-1) BW was injected intraperitoneally 2 h before cervical dislocation. Bone marrow samples were taken 24 h after the last application in both experiments. RESULTS: It was found that only the highest dose of acrylamide significantly decreased the incidence of megakaryocytic emperipolesis and that the types of bone marrow cells engulfed by megakaryocytes were mostly neutrophil granulocytes. Neither megakaryocytes nor engulfed cells showed any morphological degeneration. In the mitotic activity experiment, doses of 45 and 60 mg acrylamide kg(-1) BW decreased the mitotic activity of bone marrow cells in comparison with the control group. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that the decrease in megakaryocytic emperipolesis frequency might be a consequence of the decrease in mitotic activity in bone marrow cells. (C) 2011 Society of Chemical IndustryÖğe The suggested metaphors regarding on the concept of "cell" by teacher candidates of biology, science and primary(ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 2010) Yener, Yesim; Ozkadif, SemaThe main purpose of this study is to define the perceptions of biology, science and primary teaching candidates studying at Selcuk University on the concept of "cell" using metaphors. The data of the study was obtained through the answers given to the complete-questions such as "cell is like...because,..." and "cell is similar to..., because..." The suggested metaphors were gathered under 6 groups: "administrative", "controller", "building stone", "information store", "cooperative", "connective". As a result, it was seen that almost two third of the participants defined cell as "building stone" and "cooperative" while the rest, one third, defined it as "administrative","controller", "information store" and "connective". The results of this study indicate important data on the fact that metaphors can be used as effective tools to reveal the students' personal perceptions on the concept of cell. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd.
