The effects of dietary flaxseed oil supplementations on fatty acids composition of the yolks in quail (coturnix coturnix japonica) eggs
(KAFKAS UNIV, VETERINER FAKULTESI DERGISI, 2011) Citil, Ozcan Baris; Yildirim, Iskender; Parlat, Sinan Sefa
This experiment was carried out to determine effects of Japanese quail diets which is supplemented with different levels of omega-3 fatty acids compositions in yolk. In this study, one hundred-twenty laying quails at 10 weeks of age (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were used. They were divided into 4 tretament groups, each group included 30 quails. The diets in treatment groups contained different levels of flaxseed oil 0, 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0%, respectively. At the end of the experiment lasted for 21 days, 7 eggs taken from each group were subjected to analysis. The fatty acid compositions of egg yolks were determined by gas chromatography. Twenty seven different fatty acid components were determinated in the compositions of quail egg yolks. No differences were found in oil content among the groups. The increased ingestion of linolenic acid in diet reduced the formation of arachidonic acid in egg yolks of the treatment groups. The omega-3 fatty acid levels were higher in all treatment groups than that of control group. Supplemental flaxseed oil at the level of 3% increased the concentration of omega-3 in egg yolk. At the end of the experiment, the omega-3/omega-6 ratio increased from 0.05 (control) to 0.18 (3.0%). It was observed that when flaxseed oil amounts was increased in quail rations, omega-3 fatty acid amounts in egg yolk was improved.

Effects of preincubation application of low and high frequency ultrasound on eggshell microbial activity, hatchability, supply organ weights at hatch, and chick performance in Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) hatching eggs
(OXFORD UNIV PRESS, 2015) Yildirim, Iskender; Aygun, Ali; Sert, Durmus
The aim of the current study was to establish the effects of preincubation application of low and high frequency ultrasound on egg weight loss, hatchability, supply organ weights, chick performance, and eggshell microbial activity in Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). A total of 630 fresh eggs were randomly divided into 3 groups. Treatments were no ultrasound but eggs were sprayed with benzalkonium chloride solution (B), 35 kHz ultrasound applied for 30 min (U35), and 130 kHz ultrasound applied for 30 min (U130). At the beginning of the incubation, the eggs in the U130 treatment had lower coliform, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus counts than those in the B group. However, no significant differences were found in coliform, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus counts among treatments at d 14 of incubation. Among treatments, there were no significant differences in egg weight loss, hatchability, embryonic mortality, supply organ weights, spread of hatch, or relative growth.

The effects of various essential oils (carvacrol, cinnamaldehyde, thymol) having antimicrobial properties that are applied to broiler litter on litter hygiene and broiler performance
(ANKARA UNIV PRESS, 2011) Yildirim, Iskender
In the current study, some volatile oils including carvacrol, cinnamaldehyde and thymol compounds with 15 % solutions (added stabilizer) have been added on broiler litter material (pine shavings) in order to determine their antimicrobial properties. The litter material has been bedded as 10 cm height (3x2x0.1=0.6 m(3) litter material for each unit) and 22,5 mL of volatile oil solution were pulverized on the material according to their treatment group for every 0.6 cubic meter litter material. A total of 500 one-day old male broiler chicks (Ross-308) were used in the study. The chicks raised on pine shaving litter material during whole rearing period. Four treatment groups were designed and five replicates (25 chicks in each replication) allocated for each treatment group and totally 125 chicks were used for each treatment group. In this trial, 0-6 wks feed consumptions (FC), feed conversion rates (FCR), live weight gains (LWG) and carcass rates have been evaluated. As result, there were not established any positive effects on production parameters of broiler when volatile oil compounds added on litter material. However, the number of dead birds were decreased when thymol and cinnamaldehyde volatile oils added to litter material. Therefore, further studies should be investigated particularly on thyme and cinnamaldehyde volatile oils to asses its effects on poultry production parameters.
