Examination of Pitting and Wear in Borided, Carburized, and Borocarburized AISI 8620 Gears
(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2010) Düzcükoğlu, Hayrettin; Çalık, Adnan; İmrek, Hüseyin; Karakaş, Mustafa S.
The most important characteristic feature of boronizing is that the boron layer obtained at the surface has a very high hardness, improved wear resistance, and low coefficient of friction. Due to the sudden transition from a very hard surface to a relatively soft core, cracks are likely to occur at the interface. These cracks may lead to spalling, and therefore the advantageous effects of boronizing are limited under heavy loads. In this study, the pitting and wear behavior of spur gear surfaces of AISI 8620 steel treated by carburizing, boronizing, and borocarburizing have been examined.

Experimental and numerical failure analysis of pinned-joints in composite materials
(ELSEVIER SCI LTD, 2009) Aktaş, Alaattin; İmrek, Hüseyin; Cunedioğlu, Yusuf
In this paper, failure load and failure mode of glass-epoxy composite plates with single and double parallel pinned-joints have analysed experimentally and numerically. Two variables were investigated during analyses; the distance from the free edge of plate to the diameter of the first hole (E/D) ratio (2, 3, 4, 5), and the width of the specimen to the diameter of the holes (W/D) ratios (2, 3, 4, 5). Experiments were carried out according to the ASTM D953-D [ASTM D 953-D, Standard test method for bearing strength of plastics, ASTM designation. p. 342-6.]. The numerical study was performed by means of ANSYS finite element analysis program. Yamada-Sun failure criterion was used for failure analyses. Mechanical properties of the composite material were obtained according to ASTM standards. The results showed that the pin hole farthest from the free edge is subjected to the highest stress. A good agreement was obtained between experimental results and numerical predictions. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Solid particle erosion behaviour of glass mat-based polyester laminate composite materials
(SAGE PUBLICATIONS LTD, 2013) Bağcı, Mehmet; İmrek, Hüseyin; Aktaş, Alaattin
In this study, solid particle erosion behaviour of glass fibre mat-based polyester laminate composite materials was investigated by varying the impact velocity and the impingement angle and sizes of the abrasive particles. Impact velocities used in the tests were 23, 34 and 53m/s, while the impingement angles were 15 degrees, 30 degrees, 45 degrees, 60 degrees, 75 degrees and 90 degrees. Silicon dioxide particles with average diameters of 250, 500 and 1000m were used as abrasive particles. Experimental data were taken as reference and values of erosion rates were obtained as functions of impact velocity, impingement angle and the size of the abrasive particles. The results obtained exhibited typical ductile behaviour of glass fibre-reinforced composites, where the maximum erosion rate was recorded at an impingement angle of 30 degrees, and the erosion rates decreased as the impingement angle increased. Moreover, the erosion rates increased with the increase in impact velocity and particle size. Finally, the worn out surfaces of the test specimens were investigated on two different devices, optical microscope and scanning electron microscope.

Solid Particle Erosion Wear of GF/EP Composites with Added Al(2)O(3)
(AMER INST PHYSICS, 2010) Bağcı, Mehmet; İmrek, Hüseyin
This study has targeted to investigate wear behavior of a sort of new composite material where Al(2)O(3) (approximate to 150 mu m) particles were added to glass fiber and epoxy resin (GF/EP) at an amount of 15% and 30%. The method used in the tests, was the one that use dry and compressed air to accelerate abrasive particles onto a specimen and from there the wear formed was investigated. Striking speed was determined with the help of a double disc method by making use of pressure difference, whereas impinging angles were set by turning the specimen holder around its axis. As a result, in this experimental study, solid particle erosion behavior of a new formed composite material was investigated and erosion rates computed where three different impinging angles (30 degrees, 60 degrees and 90 degrees), three different striking speeds (23, 34 and 53 m/s) and two different fiber directions (0 and 45) were used to enable angular aluminum abrasives with average diameter of 400 mu pm to bombard target specimens to undertake the tests. In addition, the study presents microscopic views of the specimens after undergoing the tests.

Width Modification for Gears With Low Contact Ratio
    (Springer, 2009) İmrek, Hüseyin
In this study, teeth width modification on spur gears with low contact ratios is introduced. The modification essentially relies on maintaining constant Hertz surface pressure along single and double teeth profiles. With this aim, adjustments were made in tooth width along the single mesh area. It is intended that, with this modification, negative effects caused by high Hertz pressures along the single mesh area will either be minimized or completely removed.
