Clinical and light microscopic studies of the conjunctival tissues of dogs with bilateral keratoconjunctivitis sicca before and after treatment with topical 2% cyclosporine
(INFORMA HEALTHCARE, 2015) İzci, Celal; Çelik, İlhami; Alkan, Feyzanur; Erol, Muharrem; Sur, Emrah
We determined the concentrations of goblet and immune cells in conjunctival imprints and tissues of canines with keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) before and after cyclosporine A (CsA) treatment. Twelve dogs with bilateral KCS were assigned to three groups: untreated, treatment group 1, and treatment group 2. The treatment groups were treated topically with 2% ophthalmic CsA solution for 45 days; CsA treatment group 2 was followed for an additional 30 days after discontinuation of the drug. Schirmer tear test (STT) scores were recorded prior to CsA treatment and on alternate days throughout the experiment. CsA treatment improved the STT scores, restored conjunctival histology, increased goblet and epithelial cell numbers, and decreased numbers of inflammatory cells. Although the STT scores regressed slightly at day 30 after discontinuing the treatment, the scores were higher than the baseline values. Topical CsA treatment resolved clinical signs of KCS, improved STT scores and restored normal conjunctival histology.

Clinical Experience of Interlocking Nail Stabilization of Long Bone Fractures in Dogs - A Retrospective Study of 26 Cases
(ISRAEL VETERINARY MEDICAL ASSOC, 2017) Arıcan, Mustafa; Alkan, Feyzanur; Altan, Semih; Parlak, Kurtuluş; Yavru, Nuri
The aim of the study is to report the clinical and radiographic outcome after use of an interlocking nail (ILN) for stabilization of long bone fractures in dogs. Twenty-six dogs were evaluated. There were ten femoral fractures, 12 tibial fractures and four humeral fractures. The equipment was manufactured by Orthovet (Orthovet, Izmir, Turkey). Three ILN lengths with three different diameters (4, 6 and 8 mm) were used. Each ILN had a trocar tip on one end and four screw holes (two distal and two proximal). Ten fractures (four femoral, five tibial, one humeral) were associated with other orthopedic problems. Nine (39.1%) patients had aseptic nonunion and malunion fractures. A static fixation mode was used for nine fractures and a dynamic fixation mode was used in 17 (65.3%). The surgical time recorded was 45-52 minutes. Three dogs had a major complication requiring surgical intervention. At 6 months, the functional outcome was excellent in 15 (57.6%) animals, good in seven (26.9%), fair in three (11.5%), and poor in one (3.8). In conclusion, the use of ILNs to repair diaphyseal fractures of the femur, tibia, and humerus in dogs resulted in a good or excellent functional outcome in most patients.

Evaluation of the schirmer tear test in clinically normal Turkish hunting dogs (Turkish greyhound)
(UNIV GHENT, 2004) Alkan, Feyzanur; İzci, Celal; Tepeli, Cafer; Koç, Yılmaz
The aim of this study was to determine the normal values for the Schirmer tear test (STT) in Turkish HuntingDogs. This was performed in order to facilitate the diagnosis of xerophthalmia orkeratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), which is characterized by deficiencies in tear production and the resulting abnormal STT. Fifteen Turkish Hunting Dogs (8 female and 7 male) were used in this study. The dogs ranged from 6 months to 9 years old (mean 3.6 +/- 2.8) and the mean weight was 21.3 kg (13 to 27). The mean STT-1 and STT-2 values were 17.1 +/- 3.7 mm per minute and 7.7 +/- 2.8 mm per minute, respectively. Neither body weight nor age had a statistically significant effect on these values. There were significant differences in both STT-1 and STT-2 values between females and males (p<0.05), as well as daily and weekly fluctuations for STT-1 and STT-2 values (P<0.01, P<0.05, respectively). This study has shown that the STT-1 and STT-2 values in the Turkish Hunting Dogs are normally distributed and are significantly affected by sex and by measurement sequences.

Evaluation of the Schirmer tear test in two Turkish breeds of shepherd dogs
(ECOLE NATIONALE VETERINAIRE TOULOUSE, 2004) Alkan, Feyzanur; İzci, Celal; Tepeli, Cafer; Koç, Yılmaz
The Schirmer tear test 1 and 2 (STT-1 and STT-2) were performed to evaluate tear production in 20 Turkish Akbas Shepherd Dogs and 21 Turkish Kangal Shepherd Dogs. The mean values for STT-1 and STT-2 in Turkish Akbas and Kangal Shepherd Dogs were 20.7 +/- 2.9 min/min and 21.5 +/- 3.8 mm/min, and 9.8 +/- 2.3 mm/min and 9.8 +/- 3.0 mm/min, respectively. It was determined that neither body weight nor age had a statistically significant effect on these values. There were significantly differences in both STT-1 and STT-2 values between females and males in Shepherd dogs of both breeds (p < 0.05). There were significant fluctuations daily, weekly, or over time for STT-1 and STT-2 values for each breed (p < 0.05). This study has shown that the STT-1 and STT-2 values in both Turkish Akbas Shepherd Dogs and Turkish Kangal Shepherd Dogs are normally distributed and are significantly affected by breed, sex, or measurement sequences.

The right displacement of abomasum with ulceration in a calf
(Veteriner Fakultesi Dergisi, 2012) Altan, Semih; Alkan, Feyzanur; Koç, Yılmaz
The aim of this case report is to describe the clinical, ultrasonographic, and surgical findings in an 8-week-old female Holstein calf with right abomasal displacement and ulceration. Auscultation/percussion, auscultation/ballottement, and ultrasound examination were used to identify displacement of the abomasum. Right-flank laparotomy was used for repositioning of the displaced abomasum. The abomasum was greatly distended between the rumen and right body wall. Approximately 7 L of abomasal content was discharged from the abomasum. A few ulcerative areas in the mucosal surface of abomasum were observed. After surgery, antimicrobial and antiulcerative therapy were given. The calf discharged was followed with telephonically. As a result, right displacement of the abomasum is very rarely seen in calves. Right flank laparotomy gives good result in calves with right displaced abomasum, and ultrasound examination helps to distinguish right displaced abomasum from other metabolic disorders of the digestive tract in calves.

Right flank omentopexy for correction of left displaced abomasum in cattle
(INDIAN VETERINARY JOURNAL, 2004) Alkan, Feyzanur; Koç, Yılmaz; Çalım, K. H.
Left displacement of the abomasum (LDA) is one of the metabolic disorder of the digestive track of dairy cattle and characterized by various degrees of abomasal distention (Robertson et al., 1966; Fubini et al., 1992; Ok et al., 2000). Several methods for conservative and surgical treatment had been described. Conservative methods had an inherent limitation and they did not stabilize the abomasum to prevent recurrence (Lowe et al., 1965; Robertson et al., loc. cit.; Fubini et al., loc. cit.; Buckner, 1995; Braun et al., 1997). The aim of this study was to study the anamnesis, signalment, clinical findings and evaluate right flank omentopexy in cattle with left displacement of abomasum.
