(HAR KRISHAN BHALLA & SONS, 2008) Ünver, Ahmet; Arslan, Derya; Çetinkaya, Zafer; Özcan, Mehmet Musa
Inhibitory effects of methanol-water (90: 10; v/v) extract from sage (Salvia officinalis L.), laurel (Laurus nobilis L.) and thyme (Thymbra spicata L.) were tested in vitro on clinical isolates of eleven species of yeasts (C. krusei, C. clus, Rhodotorula rubra, C. albicans 10039, C. tropicalis, C. glabrata 70164, C. parasilosis, C. insane, C. rhodotonla, C. holmii and C. glabrata 13b). Preliminary experiment was carried out in vitro using the disc diffusion method to investigate antimycotic activity of the sage, laurel and thyme extracts. Thyme methanol extract showed very high antimycotic activity against all tested yeasts. Effect of laurel extract was as good as thyme extract for C. tropicalis at 40 ppm level. Generally, sage had no effect on the tested yeasts. Methanol extracts of thyme and laurel may be useful tools to control the yeasts growth.

Antioxidant effect of essential oils of rosemary, clove and cinnamon on hazelnut and poppy oils
(ELSEVIER SCI LTD, 2011) Özcan, Mehmet Musa; Arslan, Derya
Antioxidant effects of essential oils from rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), clove (Syzygium aromaticum) and cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) were determined on hazelnut and poppy oils. These essential oils were added to the oils at concentrations of 0.25% and 0.5%. Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) at 0.02% level served as standard besides the control groups for comparison. The samples were stored 50 degrees C in darkness for 14 days. The antioxidant activity of the essential oils was determined by measuring peroxide values (meq O(2)/kg oil) at regular intervals. On the basis of peroxide value assay, the essential oils showed stronger antioxidant effect when compared to control groups. BHA was more effective than the essential oils, whilst it exhibited no antioxidative effect on the first few days of storage. Amongst the investigated essential oils, the cinnamon oil was the most effective on retarding lipid oxidation of crude oils, which was followed by clove and rosemary oils. Application of fuzzy expert system approach on prediction of some quality characteristics of grape juice concentrate (Pekmez) after different heat treatments
(SPRINGER INDIA, 2011) İnan, Özlem; Arslan, Derya; Taşdemir, Şakir; Özcan, Mehmet Musa
Effects of heat treatment on physicochemical characteristics and sensory properties of different fruit juice concentrates (pekmez) were studied. Apricot pekmez had the highest viscosity followed by mulberry and date pekmez. Apricot and date pekmez had higher scores for odour, taste and consistency than others. Hydroxymethyl furfural concentration of all pekmez samples increased after heat treatments. Samples heated at 75A degrees C showed highest L* values while at 65A degrees C the lowest mean L* values. L* values of all pekmez samples were similar while carob Pekmez had higher L* values. Also a development of the Fuzzy Expert System (FES) was made for prediction. Using the experimental values, FES model of the system was designed. Accordance was found with experimental and FES results when compared statistically. This study provides advantage for prediction possibility of unknown sub-values', which were not experimentally studied.

Assessment of P-wave dispersion in children with atrial septal aneurysm
(CAMBRIDGE UNIV PRESS, 2014) Arslan, Derya; Cimen, Derya; Guvenc, Osman; Oran, Bulent; Yilmaz, Fatma Hilal
Background: This was a prospective controlled study to determine the P-wave duration and P-wave dispersion in patients with atrial septal aneurysm. Methods: A total of 41 children with atrial septal aneurysm, including 21 boys and 20 girls (mean age 11.85 +/- 3.8 years), and 32 controls, including 17 boys and 15 girls (mean age 12.3 +/- 2.9 years), were included. P-wave dispersion was calculated from the 12-lead electrocardiogram. Cardiac functions, morphology of the aneurysm, and left atrial diameter were measured using conventional echocardiography. The diagnosis of atrial septal aneurysm was made when the base of the aneurysms with an excursion ratio >= 25% was found on echocardiography. Results: There was no significant difference between the patient and control groups in demographic, clinical findings, and M-mode echocardiographic parameters. The P-wave dispersion in patients with atrial septal aneurysm was significantly longer compared with the control group (64.4 +/- 13.4 ms; p < 0.0001). Similarly, the the maximum duration of the P wave in the patient group was significantly longer compared with the control group (106.1 +/- 13.3 ms; p < 0.001). The P-wave duration and dispersion were not correlated with age, gender, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, or m-mode echocardiographic parameters. Conclusions: This study shows that P-wave dispersion is delayed in atrial septal aneurysm patients. Prolonged P-wave dispersion was determined to indicate electrical disturbance, and therefore it has an increased electrocardiographic risk of atrial arrhythmia in children with atrial septal aneurysm.

Cardiovascular MR imaging findings of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection to the portal vein in a patient with right atrial isomerism
(SPRINGER WIEN, 2012) Koplay, Mustafa; Paksoy, Yahya; Erol, Cengiz; Arslan, Derya; Kivrak, Ali Sami; Karaaslan, Sevim
Total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) is a rare congenital cardiovascular anomaly in which the pulmonary veins fail to join to the left atrium and drain directly to the right atrium or to one of the systemic veins. This anomaly is frequently seen together with complex cardiac anomalies especially as a part of right atrial isomerism syndrome. Atrial isomerism is called that the same morphological structure of both atria. We reported a very rare case demonstrating TAPVC between the portal vein and the pulmonary veins in a patient with right atrial isomerism by magnetic resonance imaging.

Changes in chemical composition of some oils extracted from seeds roasted at different temperatures
(WAGENINGEN ACADEMIC PUBLISHERS, 2015) Şimşek, E.; Özcan, Mehmet Musa; Arslan, Derya; Ünver, Ahmet; Kanbur, Gülşah
Oil seeds are commonly used in cooking, frying and as salad oil and have commercial and economic importance. Since the seeds are roasted before pressing of the oil, changes occur in their composition; thus it is crucial to modify roasting process to minimise adverse effects. This study reflects the effects of different roasting temperatures (90, 150 and 210 degrees C for 10 min. in conventional oven) on the oil constituents and some chemical properties of oils from the seeds of sesame, sunflower, soybean, flaxseed and poppy along with comparison to those of unroasted corresponding seed oils. Lipids from roasted seeds of sesame, flax and soybean exhibited relatively higher viscosity and free fatty acids, than lipids from unroasted seeds. With an increase in roasting temperatures the colour of the oils were slightly darker even though the changes were not significant in most cases. The content of alpha- and gamma-tocopherols in oils (except soybean oil) gradually decreased as roasting temperature increased. beta-tocopherol was higher in the oils of roasted seeds, while the amount of delta-tocopherol showed different trends with roasting depending on the type of seeds. For sesame and poppy oils, after roasting at 210 degrees C, stearic and oleic acids showed higher percentages when compared to the levels in oils roasted at 90 and 150 degrees C.

Co-occurrence of Carpenter syndrome and double outlet right ventricle
(TURKISH SOC CARDIOLOGY, 2017) Guvenc, Osman; Cimen, Derya; Arslan, Derya; Guler, Ibrahim
Carpenter syndrome (acrocephalopolysyndactyly type 2, OMIM 201000) is a rarely seen autosomal recessive disorder. In addition to abnormalities such as acrocephaly, craniosynostosis, facial asymmetry, polydactyly and syndactyly, obesity, hypogonadism, mental retardation, and corneal opacity, it may frequently be accompanied by congenital heart diseases such as ventricular septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus and pulmonary stenosis. Double outlet right ventricle is a defect in which both major arter-ies originate in the morphological right ventricle. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report in the literature of double outlet right ventricle disease in combination with Carpenter syndrome.

The Comparison of the Chemical Composition, Sensory, Phenolic and Antioxidant Properties of Juices from Different Wheatgrass and Turfgrass Species
(UNIV AGR SCI & VETERINARY MED CLUJ-NAPOCA, 2016) Özköse, Abdullah; Arslan, Derya; Acar, Ayşenur
Wheatgrass juice is mainly derived from the common wheat Triticum aestivum L. The present study focused on the analysis of the potential of different perennial turfgrass species in grass juice production by determining certain compositional characteristics. The effects of fertilisers on the plants and the cutting time on some chemical constituents and antioxidant potential of grass juices were addressed. The juices from the different species of grasses, such as T. durum, T. aestivum, Lolium perenne L., Festuca arundinacea Schreb. were obtained by pressing. DPPH (1, 1dipheny1-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity, elemental composition, total chlorophylls, total carotenes, tocopherols, vitamin C, total phenols, viscosity and the colour profiles of the grass juice samples were analysed. Water-soluble dry matter, protein, total phenols, flavonoids and vitamin E (especially Durum cultivar) content were found to be higher in the juices of Triticum species as compared to the other grasses. Turfgrass species demonstrated higher concentrations of oil (in grass), vitamin C (unfertilised samples), chlorophyll (except L. perenne local) and major elements. The pressing of turfgrass was an easy process. Such perennial grass varieties have advantages over the Triticum species in terms of having higher concentrations of vitamin C (unfertilised samples) and major elements. The results of sensory analysis suggested that L. perenne (cultivar) is the most promising cultivar in terms of obtaining pressed grass juice.

Coronary Arteriovenous Fistula in a Child Presenting with Chest Pain
(DERMAN MEDICAL PUBL, 2016) Arslan, Derya; Cimen, Derya; Oran, Bulent; Aygul, Nazif
Coronary arteriovenous fistula is an incidental finding in 0.1% to 0.2% of coronary angiograms. A 15-year-old famale patient presented with a three years history of chest pain on exertion. Echocardiography was performed previously and a small muscular ventricular septal defect was detected. The electrocardiogram was normal sinus rhythm together with normal axis. On echocardiography, left ventricular function was normal and there was continuous flow into the right ventricle. Therefore, coronary angiography was performed for considering the coronary artery fistula. Coronary artery fistula was observed between the first septal perforating branch of the left anterior descending coronary artery with right ventricle. The patient's clinical follow-up was decided since a significant shunt could not be identified.
