Background: Activity-promoting video game systems are becoming increasingly popular. The purpose of this prospective study is to compare the cardiovascular adverse effects of playing these games in children with heart disease. Material and Methods: This prospective patient group consisted of 20 children with heart diseases and 20 sex and age matched healthy controls. Electrocardiography and transthoracic echocardiography were performed in all patients. All the patient and healthy controls performed the activity-promoting video game during another 15 minutes. Heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure were measured while participants were playing the video game. Results: High heart and respiratory rate, high blood pressures and perceived exertion were elicited from playing video game. The predicted cardiovascular adverse effects were observed while playing video game. Most common symptoms were fatigue, dizziness, nausea and chest pain during video game. Conclusions: Activity-promoting video games naturally have the potential to increase movement with the drawback of increase in also cardiovascular adverse effects in children with heart disease. Play time of these video games must be limited, and sudden death must be considered especially for children with serious heart failure or obstructive cardiovascular lesions.
