    Chiral Calixarenes
(Nova Science Publishers, Inc, 2010) Sırıt, Abdülkadir; Yılmaz, Mustafa; Bartsch, Richard A.
The development of calixarene-based host molecules containing chiral residues at either the lower or the upper rims of the calixarene macrocyclic ring is reviewed in this chapter. These supramolecular models are of particular significance for understanding the interactions between biological molecules, design of asymmetric catalysis systems, development of new pharmaceutical agents, and analysis and separation of enantiomers.

Immobilization of cyclic alkylamine calix[4]arene derivatives on merrifield resin: Evaluation of extraction ability toward dichromate
(TAYLOR & FRANCIS INC, 2006) Akceylan, Ezgi; Yılmaz, Mustafa; Bartsch, Richard A.
Two new calix[4]arene-based polymeric resins were synthesized via nucleophilic substitution reactions involving 5,11,17,23-tetrakis(N-piperidinomethyl)-25,26,27,28-tetrahydroxycalix[4]arene ( 2 ) and 5,11,17,23-tetrakis[4-carboethoxy-N-piperidino]-25,26,27,28-tetrahydroxycalix[4]arene ( 4 ) as precursors with Merrifield resin. Extraction studies were performed by liquid-liquid extraction and solid-liquid adsorption procedures. The monomeric compounds showed excellent extraction ability toward dichromate in liquid-liquid extraction systems. Polymeric resin 3 with calixarene moieties exhibited high adsorption properties, while resin 5 showed lower adsorption of dichromate in solid-liquid extractions.

Removal of azo dyes from aqueous solutions using calix[4]arene and beta-cyclodextrin
(ELSEVIER SCI LTD, 2007) Yılmaz, Aydan; Yılmaz, Elif; Yılmaz, Mustafa; Bartsch, Richard A.
A calix[4]arene-based oligomer 5 and a P-cyclodextrin polymer 6 were synthesized by the condensation of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene and beta-cyclodextrin, respectively, with hexamethylene diisocyanate. In their batch sorption of selected azo dyes, the beta-cyclodextrin polymer 6 was found to be a better azo dye sorbent than the p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene-based oligomer 5. In addition, oligomer 4 containing pendant calix[4]arene units with crown-6 functionalities on the lower rim was synthesized and its complexation of the azo dyes was investigated by liquid-liquid extraction. The calix[4]crown-6 oligomer 4 showed the highest affinity for the azo dyes. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Synthesis of a calix[4]crown-6 cone conformer-based oligomer and its metal cation extraction abilities
(TAYLOR & FRANCIS INC, 2006) Yılmaz, Aydan; Yılmaz, Mustafa; Bartsch, Richard A.
A new calixcrown-6 oligomer 5 was synthesized by reacting a 1,3-distal di-amino derivative of cone p-tert- butylcalix[ 4] crown-6 with malonyl dichloride. Extraction studies with precursor monomers 2 and 3 and oligomer 5 showed differences in their metal cation extraction behavior and selectivity. Precursors monomers 2 and 3 were selective for Hg2+; whereas, oligomer 5 showed high affinity towards both alkali (Li+, Na+, K+, and Cs+) and heavy metal cations (Cu2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+).
