The Correlation Between Bull Sperm Head Dimensions and Mitochondrial Helix Length
    (MEDWELL ONLINE, 2010) Çiftçi, H. B.; Zülkadir, U.
The objective of this study was to find the relationship between bull sperm head dimensions, elongation, ellipticity and mitochondrial helix length in order to find a parameter for the measurement of sperm motion. Sperm cells were obtained from Holstein bulls and supravital stained with Nigrosin-Eosin then smeared on replicate slides. Sperm head length, head width, elongation, ellipticity and mitochondrial length were measured as 14.25 +/- 0.17, 7.27 +/- 0.23, 0.32 +/- 0.09, 1.98 +/- 0.18 and 20.30 +/- 0.15, respectively. But no statistically important correlations were found between these traits and mitochondrial lengths.

The Effect of Oestradiol-17 Beta on the Motility, Viability and the Acrosomal Status of Bull Sperm
(SOUTH AFRICAN JOURNAL OF ANIMAL SCIENCES, 2010) Çiftçi, H. B.; Zülkadir, U.
The aim of this study was to test the effect of oestradio1-17 beta (E(2)) on the motility, viability and the acrosomal status of bull sperm in vitro. Pooled semen from Holstein bulls were incubated in the presence of 2, 4, and 8 mu g E(2)/mL for 24 h. Semen was also incubated in media without E(2). During the incubation, the number of motile, viable sperm and the number of sperm possessing lost/damaged acrosomes, cytoplasmic droplets and coiled tails were counted at 0, 4, 18 and 24 h of incubation. Addition of 2 mu g E(2)/mL at 18 h of incubation increased the total motility over the control. The number of forward progressing sperm was increased by the supplementation of 2 and 8 mu g E(2)/mL over the control group at the 4 h incubation. Lower doses of E(2) (2 and 4 mu g/mL) did not affect viability of sperm, but a high dose of E(2) (8 mu g/mL) caused reductions in viability at 4 and 24 h of incubation. The number of sperm cells with lost acrosomes was significantly high in control group at 24 h of incubation. The number of sperm cells possessing proximal and distal cytoplasmic droplets and the number of sperm cells bearing coiled tails were not altered by any of the treatments. A small dose of E(2) (2 mu g/mL) had a beneficial effect on the motility and acrosome integrity of bull sperm in vitro. Higher dose of E(2) (8 mu g/mL) had a detrimental effect on viability.

The effect of some testicular characteristics of Akkaraman and Awassi rams on litter size
    (1996) Öztürk, A.; Dağ, B.; Zülkadir, U.
In this study. some testis characteristics of 27 Akkaraman and 28 Awassi rams were determined and the relationship between testis size and their mothers' litter size were investigated. Testis diameter, testis lenght, scrotal circumference and scrotum lenght were found as 6.44, 12.17. 33.75 and 18.03 cm for Akkaraman rams and for Awassi rams 5.86, 11.95, 31.70 and 17.63 cm, respectively. There were statistically significant differences between breeds for testis diameter and scrotal circumference (P<0.01), and the differences for testis lenghts and scrotum lengths were no found significant. Correlations between liveweights and testis measurements were found statistically significant for Akkaraman rams, and found insignificant for Awassi rams. The results of this investigation indicated that there were no significant differences between litter sizes of rams' mothers having large and little testis size for both breeds.
