Özet
Background/Problem Statement: To have reading habits is different from having reading skills. Generally, students begin to gain reading skills from the first grade. The question is: Do these students acquire reading habits during their high schooling years and experiences? Family and school are two main institutions that are responsible for educating students to gain reading habits because a family is where students grow up and school is where students are educated. Purpose/Objectives/Research Question/Focus of Study: The purpose of this study was to examine the level of students' reading books while they were in the high school. Methods: The relationships between students' reading levels and their college program, type of their high school, type of university entrance exam score, and gender were examined. In order to collect data, a survey that consisted of twenty-two items has been implemented. Findings/Results: According to the results, students' reading levels when they were in high school were very low. Especially, students have not read enough printed materials about 20th century, which is very important period for Turkish people. Particularly, the half of the students has read books about republic era, which covers less than a century. In fact, less than 20 percent of the students have read Oration (Nutuk) that was written by Ataturk. This result indicates that the new generation loves and follows Ataturk's principles without reading and understanding his ideas. Conclusions/Recommendations: Teachers in the classroom should emphasize that having habits of reading books is a crucial for human beings. Particularly, students should be motivated to read books about the twentieth century. By doing so, students will have opportunity to have knowledge and to understand events and heroes in republic era. In fact, they will be good citizens. To create intellectual society, reading activities should be enhanced and supported in schools.
