1965 yılında 100.000'i aşan şehir merkezinin nüfusu 1990 yılında 200.000'i ve 2000 yılında 250.000'i aşmıştır.
In this study, called ?The Environmental Problems Related to Urbanization and Industrialization in the City of Sivas?, it is focused on air, soil, water and noise pollution which occur in the city centre due to urbanization and industrialization. Sivas, which looked like a small city with a population of 26.000 in the early years of the republican system, entered into a period of industrialization with the establishments of Tudemsas, Cement Factory and Concrete Travers Factory in those years and owing to this fact the population of the city centre increased continually. The population of the city centre, which exceeded 100.000 in 1965, exceeded 200.000 in 1990 and 250.000 in 2000. Due to the increase in the population of the city centre, there has been an increase concerning the environmental problems. When it is looked at the results of the partical substance and SO2 measurements prepared by the Health Department of the city in five different stations, it has been observed that the amounts of SO2 and participle substances in the air have exceeded the values stated in the Air Pollution Control Regulations in some periods. The Kızılırmak River, which passes through the city centre, is the only taker space for the waste water of the many factories located in the city centre, today?s waste storation area and the city itself. And pollutant components which come from other little rivers and which mix into the Kızılırmak, the pollution increases more and more. The garbage, which is collected from the city centre, is stored with rough storation method and without any discrimination and this fact leads to soil pollution. The water which leaks from the waste storation area mixes into the river without any purification. As the water of the river is used in agricultural watering, the wastes which mix into the river through the water leaking from the waste storation area have been indirectly passing into the soil. The studies carried out on the noise population shows that the noise level resulting from traffic is high especially in some streets. Even though the problem of slum houses, which appears as a result of industrialization and urbanization as a consequence of industrialization, does not seem to be a great problem for the city of Sivas, the fact that there are partially shanty settlements gives the idea that unless the necessary precautions are taken, it will be a problem in the future.
