In this study, three novel silica-based Schiff base ligands and their metal complexes were synthesized. We tried to determine adsorbent properties of Schiff base lidands which were synthesized according to results of batch studies. On the first stage of the study, silica gel was treated with HCl then was kept under vacuum at 170 oC for 24 h to activate it. Surface of activated silica gel was modified with (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxy silane compound. Silica-based Schiff base ligands were synthesized by condensation reaction between the carbonyl functional groups of 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde, furfuraldehyde and 5-bromosalicylaldehyde compounds and terminal functional group (-NH2) of aminopropyl-modified silica gel. The complexes were obtained from the reaction between the synthesized ligands and acetate salts of copper and nickel metals. Structures of the activated silica gel, the modified silica gel, silica-based Schiff base ligands and their metal complexes were characterized by FT-IR, TGA, elemental analysis and magnetic susceptibility techniques. On the second stage of the study, adsorbent properties of the synthesized silica-based Schiff base ligands were determined with work in aqueous solutions of Cu(II) and Ni(II) metal ions in various concentrations. The samples were analyzed at Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy instrument and the obtained results were applicated to the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models, then isotherm constants were calculated and interpreted.
