dc.description.abstractThis study analyzes the story collections Skinship by Yoon Choi and Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri in connection with Julia Kristeva's theories on semiotic and symbolic revolutions, abject, melancholy, and estrangement. This thesis argues that the narratives of different waves of Korean-American and Indian-American immigrants, whose identities have been problematized, the difficulties they experienced regardless of race, even though there are great cultural differences, and the problems of self and the other are discussed as the narratives of the abject. In this context, America's foreign cities and different immigrant profiles in Choi's and Lahiri's texts are analyzed as dreams and disillusionment, truths and fallacies, and longing and escape. Fighting for freedom, their protagonists move from Korea and India to America in order to escape chaotic and tragic environments and live a better life. While the characters seek freedom in a different country, they have fallen into the position of the other and the stranger, and this has caused both themselves and their environment to portray them as abjects. In the stories of the two writers, the cultural differences differentiate what is considered abject, while the reactions to abject are similar. In the study, the destruction and reconstruction of the "I" in another country, which is defined as symbolic, by leaving their homeland, which is described as semiotic, the dichotomy of the invader and the entrenched, the separation of the symbolic as the language (the law of the father) with the semiotics as the maternal, the fragmentation of immigrant definitions, and finally the rupture of the abject (the other) are discussed through the tragedy of the immigrant subjects in Choi's Skinship and Lahiri's Unaccustomed Earth.
dc.description.abstractBu çalışma, Yoon Choi'nin Skinship ve Jhumpa Lahiri'nin Unaccoustomed Earth adlı hikâye koleksiyonlarındaki kimlikleri sorunsallaştırılan göçmen öznelerini, Julia Kristeva'nın semiyotik ve sembolik devrimleri, iğrenme, melankoli ve yabancılaşma teorileriyle bağlantılı olarak analiz etmektedir. Özellikle Kristeva'nın zelil (abjekt) kavramı bağlamında ilerleyen "ben ve öteki"nin bu eserlerdeki anlatılarının, hayalleri ve hayal kırıklıklarını, hakikati ve yanılgıları, özlemi ve kaçışı temsil ettiği ileri sürülmektedir. Kuzey Amerika'nın yabancı şehirlerinin ulaşılmaya çalışılan ancak ulaşılamayan bir kavram olarak sembolize edildiği, Choi'nin ve Lahiri'nin eserlerindeki göçmen profillerinin hakikat arayışlarını ve yanılsamalarını yansıttığı analiz edilirken, bu profillerin anavatanlarına duydukları hasreti ve aynı zamanda oradan kaçış isteklerini simgelediği belirtilmiştir. Bu ikirciklik arasındaki "ben"ler Kore'den ve Hindistan'dan Amerika'ya daha iyi bir yaşam umuduyla hareket ederek yeni bir ülkede özgürlüğü ararken öteki ve yabancı konumuna düşmüş, bu durum hem kendilerini hem çevrelerini hem de çevrelerinin onları abjekt olarak tasvir etmelerine sebep olmuştur. Birbirinden bağımsız iki yazarın hikayelerindeki farklı kültürel bağlamlar bu tasviri tanımsal olarak birbirinden ayrı kılsa da hikayelerdeki öznelerin iğrenç karşısında gösterdiği tepkiler benzerdir. Bu bilgiler ışığında, bu çalışmada, "ben"lerin semiyotik olarak tasvir edilen (ana)vatanlarından ayrılarak sembolik (baba) olarak tanımlanan diğer bir ülkede yaşadığı yıkım ve yeniden oluşum, işgalci ve yerleşik ikiliği, göçmen tanımlarının parçalanması ve nihayetinde Skinship ve Unaccoustomed Earth'teki göçmen öznelerin trajedisi üzerinden öteki konumuna düşenin kopuşu tartışılır.
