Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a severe manifestation of acute lung injury. This syndrome is characterized by widespread damage to the endothelium and epithelium of the alveolus. Considerable attention has recently been directed to the contribution of neutrophils, macrophages, cell adhesion molecules, cytokines and other mediators to the development of ARDS. The purpose of this article is to provide an update on cellular mechanisms and mediators of ARDS.en_US
