Why is the “Mathnaw?” Called “the Shop of Oneness”? Reflections on R?m?’s Methodology

| dc.description.abstract | Mathnaw? should be viewed, first of all, as the fruit of an intoxicated spirit, which neither can, nor wants to become sober. Some parts of the Mathnaw? do possess certain elements of organization, but, on the whole, this is a rather loose composition with its frequent deviations and interruptions and gives a good evidence of this intoxication. What this intoxication implies is one of the questions this paper aims to answer. The first part covers that R?m?’s teaching’s all efforts are focused on perceiving the “oneness in manyness” (wahdat dar kathrat), while the “manyness in oneness” (kathrat dar wahdat) is treated rather as a misleading illusion, not worthy of (the mystic’s) consideration. Second part discusses why R?m? denied the importance of form in favour of meaning. Third part covers R?m?’s explanation on his Mathnaw?, like the Qur’?n, it has several “bottoms” (i.e., levels of understanding). In fourth part why The Mathnaw? is a shop is exemplified. Oneness of meaning, which is sold by the poet, is wrapped in the cover of the manyness of forms. Consequently, if the form is used (the veil, the metaphor), this is because of the utmost subtlety of the meaning. In this respect, the opposition “oneness – manyness” can be reduced to a more general opposition “meaning – form”. | en_US |
| dc.description.abstract | Mesnevî her şeyden önce, ne kendinde olan ne de olmak isteyen kendinden geçmiş bir ruhun meyvesidir. Mesnevî’nin bazı kısımları için bir kurgulamadan söz edilebilir ancak bütüne bakıldığında, kendinden geçmenin (mestlik) kanıtı olan sürekli sapma ve araya başka şeylerin girmesiyle oldukça serbest bir düzenlemedir. Kendinden geçmenin ne anlama geldiği makalenin cevaplamayı amaçladığı sorulardan biridir. Birinci kısımda, Mevlâna’nın öğretilerinde, “vahdet içinde kesret”in, önemsiz ve yanlış yönlendirici bir şaşırtmaca olarak ele aldığı, aksine “kesret içinde vahdet”i kavrama üzerinde odaklandığı anlatılır. İkinci kısımda Mevlâna’nın anlamın yanında “biçim”i neden reddettiğinden bahsedilir. Üçüncü kısımda, Mesnevî’nin Kur’ân-ı Kerîm gibi çok katmanlı olduğu, dördüncü kısımda ise Mesnevî’nin neden “Vahdet Dükkânı” olduğu anlatılır. Anlamın tekliği, farklı biçimlerde sunulan ifadelerin içinde gizlidir. Sonuç olarak, biçim’in kullanılması anlamın inceliğinden kaynaklanmaktadır. Bu bakımdan “vahdet-kesret” karşıtlığı, daha genel bir karşıtlığa, “anlam-biçim”e indirgenebilir. | en_US |
