Özet
In this paper the recent developments in the Turkish banking sector after 1980 are being examined. The effects of April 1994, November 2000 and February 2001 crises are analysed. In the framework of restructuring program, the financial, operational reorganisation of state owned banks and banks handed over to the fund have been evaluated. Furthermore the measures which are taken to strengthen the financial structure of private banks are being focused on. Finally the future of the Turkish banking sector
is being evaluated and some suggestions for improvement are being made. Some of these suggestions are as follows: Banks should concentrate mainly on their fundamental activities. Besides they should strengthen their financial structure by means of raising their capital, finding new shareholders and through mergers and acquisitions. Last but not least, topics such as asset & liability management and risk management should be reviewed with great significance.
