Abstract

Fungicide application is one of the most common postharvest strategies in preventing agricultural commodity losses due to postharvest physiological and pathological deteriorations. Researchers have been forced to investigate alternative methodologies for fungicide usage because chemicals have detrimental influences on human health. UV-C (UV-C, 200-280 nm), among such strategies, gives positive results in preventing postharvest decay of products. UV-C in 254 nm wave length in particular is effective to maintain postharvest quality of produces by inducing response of produce against stress factors. In the present study, effects of various doses of UV-C light on postharvest quality maintenance of Albion and Monterey strawberries have been investigated. The harvested fruits were immediately transported to the laboratory of Selcuk University Agriculture Faculty Horticulture Department. The fruits were subjected to UV-C treatment in varying time (15 and 30 min.) and stored at 1°C, 90% relative humidity. The fruits were sampled with regular intervals for physical and biochemical analyses. As a result, it was concluded that 15 min UV-C application was an effective application to extend the shelf life of Albion and Monterey strawberry varieties by maintaining the quality characteristics during 15 days cold storage. © 2018, Centenary University.
