Abstract
Refik Halit Karay is one of the cornerstones of Turkish storytelling. He is a writer who has managed to be a permanent artist in Turkish literature with his books named Karay Memleket Hikâyeleri and Gurbet Hikâyeleri. His power of observation regarding events and people is among the qualities that make him different in our literature. Homeland Stories, which are the subjects of our study, reflect the period in which they were written in a realistic way in terms of events and people. All of these texts written with the understanding of the event story end with a surprising ending. The setting for Homeland Stories are Istanbul and Anatolia. Most of the stories are the result of his observations during his exile years in Bilecik, Sinop, Çorum and Ankara. All of the Homeland Stories, written between 1909-1919, depict local life.. 2 Literature has a direct relationship with life. In Refik Halit Karay's Homeland Stories, a social criticism of life always draws attention in the sections he presents from the environment where ordinary people live in Istanbul and the life of towns and villages in Anatolia. In his stories, he deals with his people in social aspects rather than individual characteristics. He reflects the attitude of the people he includes in his stories - civil servants, district governors, judges, imams, clergymen, tradesmen, and mukhtars - towards events rather than their inner world. He expresses his social criticisms under several headings, including Anatolia, bureaucracy, clergy and women. Although the author uses the characters of the opposing power group as a tool in his social criticism throughout the text, he has not neglected to include the brave, devoted and devoted people of the society. This study aims to find out how Refik Halit Karay in Homeland Stories deals with social issues in the society with a critical understanding.
