After Möngke Khan sent Hulagu Khan to Asia Minor, the Ilkhanate State was established by Hulagu Khan shortly after. Hulagu Khan chose Meraga as the first capital of the Ilkhanids. Subsequently, in the Abaka period, the Ilkhanid capital was determined as Tabriz. By the time of Gâzân Khan, the Ilkhanids entered a new phase in terms of establishing cities. He had new settlements built such as Gâzân Khan, Şenb-i Gâzân and Mahmudabad. Besides, he adopted the idea of building a new city in Şeru-yazı, which was used as a summer pasture by the Ilkhanid, by Argun Khan. However, this city was completed with the efforts of Sultan Oljeytü. Sultan Oljeytü gave the name of Sultaniye to the newly established city and sent artisans and traders from all over the country to this city. In addition, he determined the city as the capital. Thus, the city turned into one of the important trade centers of the Near East in a short time. However, the rapidly rising attraction of Sultaniye began to wane with the death of Sultan Oljeytü. Despite all this, the city of Sultaniye remained one of the most important political and commercial centers of the Near East until the beginning of the XVth century. This study will try to examine the establishment of the city of Sultaniye, its rise and its commercial importance in the Middle Ages, with reference to the sources of the period.
